Thought I would share my first attempt at 'proper' modding with you all.
I ordered a couple of switches/battery boxes/LEDs/resistors ages ago in anticipation of making a box mod, but they've been relegated to the garage whilst waiting for the 501 bat connectors I ordered through the group buy (and subsequenty spending too much on other vaping goodies in the interim)
I really wanted to make a box mod, but lack of batteries (& funds) stopped that for the time being. But then I read somewhere that someone made a USB passthrough using an M401 charger (About 2.80 from LF) which takes the 501 carto's...
...so I ordered one to see what I could do. Unfortunately the switches I'd ordered previously are quite long (about 24mm) and woudn't fit the 401 charger case (my fault for paying no attention to the dimensions upon ordering!) so I had to look around the house/garage for inspiration.
I tried to hollow out an old clipper lighter I had lying around, but there wasn't enough space inside for the gubbings, and nor did I have time before I had to leave for work to be too intricate so I had to find something else...

...I had an old marker pen on my desk, which I chopped in half to see if the switch & connector would fit. They didn't, but after a quick session with the drill I managed to create just enough room for the the parts to squeeze into. In fact, the fit is so tight they are held quite securely!
I used an old mouse USB cable to supply the power, and, as there are 2 parts which are joined, I used an old USB-micro USB for that.
2 parts you say? As a bit of a twist, I decided it would be much neater and ultimately less fiddly if I could have the switch seperate from the 510 connector, and as it will be only used at home I wasn't too worried about the practicality of that kind of system...

I quite like it!
It was only a 'mess around' whilst I wait to buy batteries. I am too impatient!
It isn't too bad - not as potent as I thought it would be, but then the USB plug I have only kicks out 1000mA, and I'm not sure what the laptop dishes out? It works for now, but the cabling in the leads I used is really thin, and possibly can't cope with too much current, plus as I was rushing to finish in time for work I didn't take much care of the soldering, so if I can find a better lead I will replace and resolder at a later date.
For now I'm happy with its retro-esque looks!
Oh, and it took about an hour from chopping the pen in half to putting the finishing touches to it.

Lol Giz, that's quite the contraption Although I will second Karma's comment and suggest you try to avoid death at all costs lol I'm not sure I'd be brave enough to plug it into my laptop lol

Good point from Jemima - when trying not to blow yoursef up, do not blow your laptop up either

I have more battery connectors on their way, but fear not - they will be used for battery powered mods. I've got my eye on the 18650's at LF, which seem to be permanently out of stock...hopefully come the end of the month they'll have some more???

make sure you read up on the dangers of shorting out a lithium ion battery before attempting any battery mods

Macca is correct although i place no doubt in your skills powering from the laptop is not something i would be doing and isn't recommended even on the production passthroughs - However lovely innovative modding which is lovely to see
