Macca is correct although i place no doubt in your skills powering from the laptop is not something i would be doing and isn't recommended even on the production passthroughs - However lovely innovative modding which is lovely to see I thought production passtroughs were developed with power coming from a USB output on a PC in mind? Therefore is there a huge difference between a USB o/p from a laptop as opposed to a PC's? So where does the charger come into it? Ah haa! I forgot to mention that part.....this is where I got the idea from and was basically going to copy this example: ukvapers.com/topic/14569-my-diy-911-passthrough/However - due to the buttons I had being too big, I scrapped the charger mod idea but used the battery connector to make the pen mod.

Technically no difference but if something were to short out and the passthrough were to suddenly try to take more than the USB can give then pop goes the motherboard on both PC and Lappy. I'm not saying this happens a lot but a: there's a chance and b: i'd rather it blow a wallwart rather than my pc .. Here's a link to other peoples discussion www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/ask-veterans/241866-usb-pass-through-concerns.html . Like i said not saying it's a certainty merely a possibility

Regardless of a laptop or a PC, USB2 ports on computers were designed to output only between 500-900 ma.
Even a low powered e-cig requires at least 1.3 amps (1300 mah). If you draw more current from these devices they'll eventually burn out your mobo. Lappys will be the first to go as they already have trouble getting rid of excess heat.

@ Mark & Maccafan: Thanks for the info, points taken. I always thought the USB o/p's were low power, but as there are quite a few passthroughs on the market that utilise these I've never really considered the power drawn to be a concern.
To be honest - I don't really like the thought of plugging something into a USB port or through a mains convertor and then into my mouth so I have snipped off the USB plug and soldered the wire directly into a 4 x AA battery box. I have Duracell rechargeable batteries so once they are drained I shall whip them out and charge separately. Although each battery is rated at 1.2v, all 4 are giving a reading of 5.56v - which suits me.
Its not quite as portable as most battery powered devices, but its ideal to use in front of the tv!
Now all i need is some mod batteries and charger to use when I get the 510 connectors I ordered through the GB. I'm looking at some protected 18650's either from LF (when in stock?) or ebay.

Glad to see you aren't disheartened Giz i've been looking into 18650 mods myself Never! Its only a momentary feeling, then it's back to the drawing board! An idea I had but didn't have time to make work was how I could use the switch in this mod, but have it inside a one piece tube (in this case a marker pen) under the battery connector, so you would use a pushing force with your lips/mouth as you 'took a drag'? Kind of like a semi automatic battery, but instead of sucking to activate it, you would press the carto into the tube, which in turn would press the switch and activate the battery/power source. Its not something I would ordinarily do, but the switch I had was something like 24mm in length and was too long for what I wanted to do. The more I think about what I want (something easy to handle. Pocket friendly. Potentially 6volts+. Preferably variable. Not too ugly so is pub friendly. Uses cheap, easily replaced batteries. etc) the more I think it may be easier, and probably cheaper in the long run to buy a Lava Tube????

to be honest the lavatube is pretty cheap for what it is ...alot of the box mods find it hard to compete for value

Seems like a steal. I have no batteries or a charger so it would be cheaper to get one of the kits. I have a funny feeling I'm about to get myself a new shiny?? ?

Once they've gone I could then use SR cartos at higher v for the same affect, if thats what I wanted? I can live with that

I think you can use the LR's somewhere in the range of 4.2 - 4.4v (thats for single coil 2 Ohms) meaning you still have plenty of range for them - i start mine off at 3.7v and i'm usually at 4.2-4.3 when it's time to change the carto
