The thing is macca I don't know lol.
All I know is batts are pretty much dead if they don't hold the charge anymore.

The only time you would attempt to raise the center pin slightly is when you put a try several known working carts on a battery and they don't work. If they are working, I would leave the center pin alone.
You are right in saying that if your batteries don't hold charge anymore, they are dead.
