I wanted to try something old skool and different so ordered a gg odysseus clone, now im reading about nr/r/nr wire, do I need this or can I use straight up kanthal? Be abit peeved if I cant, any pros about?

You need the nr/r/nr wire, they are available ready made.

Its because of the length of the coil legs that you need the non res wire as the resulting res would be very very high

Hmmm had a thought, what about if a lower awg was used or something like a twisted wire? Just a thought as never used this style of tank before

You can twist the legs and it's not a bad compromise if you stay at ~1Ω.
But you are better served with the pre-mades or DIY Nr-R-Nr.
