The batteries come in a variety of colours. I got black because I'm not into psychedelic mods, so wanted the base to match. Price for the battery alone seem to be about $16, so about £11. Hopefully the price will come down, especially if the system catches on with different base units.

Can someone explain why this is a "good concept"? To me, it's a gimmick to sell expensive batteries, plus the extra messing about clipping it in.

The board/chip part is in the base unit. To attach the battery you just slide it onto the base. To change it you just slide it off and attach another. Each battery has a micro usb connector, so it can be charged away from the base, or if you want to, while attached to the base unit with pass through. The battery has an led and shows red when charging or green when charged. The size of the battery part is similar to an 18650, although it's enclosed in a very well constructed case. So you have the best of both worlds. Changeable battery, or fixed battery, depending on how you want to use it. No need for a separate charger, just use a regular usb cable, so safer.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that the batteries are LiPo, not the Lion which 'normal' 18650s are. I'm sure I have read (here?) that the chemistry is safer and they should last longer both in individual charge and in the number of charges the batteries will take before fading. I have also had a heft of one at my local shop, and whilst I like the design, am not sure if it will take off although the number of colour combinations between the base unit and the batteries may satisfy those of us who wish for something a bit more individual.

Yes it is a LiPo battery, not just an 18650 stuffed in the case. I'm not using mine at it's max wattage, but it's lasting a good while, and charges quickly. Easy to see when it's charged as the led changes from red to green. The charging led only comes on when it's on charge. In use there is the usual battery symbol on the screen.
