It's an interesting debate to be sure . . . we look at this doors over baccy products through the eyes of ' committed ' nicotine users . . . would a young person considering taking up the habit, be put off by not being able to see the products on sale? I don't know, guess only time will tell on that one. I did see a short piece on Breakfast the other day, chronicling the changing attitudes to smoking since the 50's and detailing how the population percentage of smokers has declined since then. Although the cynic in me, questions the actual motives behind a lot of whatever Government does on issues, that are so say for our benefit.

in my view it doesn't matter what the government do as long as they are seen doing something... i dont think they're really that worried by what it is, they just want to be able to say well we are doing something proactive

Just seems like lip service to me. Like when they say they'll get tough on drink drivers to get into power, then all they do is lower the legal limit of units allowed by 1 point or something silly and expect it to make a difference. Changing the punishment to be harsher would be doing something, lowering the limit just makes it easier to be fined and doesn't prevent drink driving any more than it did before. Though, they'll get a lot of support from people believing they actually made a difference by not really doing anything significant.
Will taking branding off of cigarette packets and hiding them make any difference? I doubt it.
It's not a restriction in any way, you buy them at the same price and although you can't see the brand on the box, any kids would see the same people smoking the same cigarettes as they always have done. Since children will still see smokers, what does hiding the boxes achieve? Any children with smoking parents will know where they come from.
What's the point in taking branding off of boxes? There's no advertising for cigarettes, yet new people take up smoking. Peer pressure, wanting to - whatever the reason I'd bet almost all of them come from seeing other people smoking. There isn't even advertising on the boxes so what really is the point?
I would love to know their justification behind it. I can't see how this is going to change anything so what reasons could they possibly give?

Just think of all the staff on the ciggy counters 6 months down the line claiming against their employers for repetitive stress injuries for the amount of times they have to open said doors in a day .. now that would be funny

How many kids do we know who don't want to taste 'forbidden fruit'? It just makes it more appealing IMHO. That doesn't mean I condone it in any way, but so many kids love to break rules or it's peer pressure, or even bullied into it by other kids.
IMO again, no one in this forum can be anti-smoking, we'd be hypocrites if we were, we're all ex-smokers. Smoking's legal and smokers shouldn't be made to feel like they have the plague by hiding their intended purchases behind closed doors. If people want to smoke, then smoke they will come hell or high water, as we all did at one time. The whole concept is ridiculous.

Anne this is what I think exactly , I didn't start smoking too look cool or anything like that , I think the main reason I started was because I was always the "good" kid and I wanted to do something bad without being too confrontational , and hiding things behind doors will only make kids think I wonder why its so good they have to hide it. Stopping smoking in public places is a good thing hiding it behind closed doors is encouraging it , too my mind anyway

Just like us and vaping, smokers are adults, who know the risks, and should be allowed to make their own choices, not be treated like children, or a lower class of citizen. I really don't see what they stand to gain from hiding cigarettes, and I look forward to seeing the ingenious ways around this that people come up with, printed lists of brands on the counter?

Maybe like Argos, get a ticket and wait for your number to be called? The mind boggles ...

I saw this for the first time in Asda tonight. It wouldn't have stopped me for a second asking for cigs. I don't know how I would think about this if I still smoked
