This is something i think for new users needs to be clarified and from my searching no one had covered it in this way.
Ok so your new to vaping you used to smoke 15 to 20 a day, you went through the usual steps- cigalikes, to ego's to something a bit better for example an istick with a nautilus tank or similar. You vape 12 to 18mg juice as this is what seems to give you the throat hit like your cigarettes did.
Your happy vaping away just fine but then you see some videos and vape reviews and you see massive clouds of vapour, you do some research and understand that you need to build a lower ohm coil ideally have a dual coil and dripping atomizer and maybe some high vg juice so you get all the gear and give it a go but immediately cough your lungs up trying to inhale on your new setup! why?
You do some more research and hear someone mention about using a lower nicotine level in drippers and sub ohm vaping so you go out and but some 0.3mg juice and try again still you cough up when you try to inhale! what going on you ask?
from all the videos i have seen there has been mention about "doing bit lung inhales" but no one has ever clarified why and under what circumstances.
So here is a summery based on my observations and experience-
if you try and do a direct lung inhale with a nic level over 6mg the chances are regardless of device you will cough on inhale. The reason for this is because the nicotine in high concentration will irritate the back of the throat. (throat hit but extreme) doing a direct lung takes in more vapour in less time.
If you try to do a mouth to lung inhale on a dripping atomizer device with a 6mg or lower nic level chances are you will cough. the reason for coughing with the dripping atomizer and low nic level is because your doing mouth to lung and the atomizer has very good airflow and the coil is close to your mouth. mouth to lung will be slower inhale so the nicotine has time to irritate the back of the throat.
as a guide for new users-
if you are vaping with a tank setup something like a kayfun or similar you could vape a high nicotine level doing a mouth to lung inhale with a coil range between 0.8 and 1.6ohms If you are using a dripping atomizer you can do direct lung inhales with a nic level between 0mg and 0.6mg .
This of course can all vary depending on device for example there are lots of good airflow sub ohm tanks on the market like the lemo, kanger subtank etc.. lots of these come with pre built coils that are sub ohm 0.2ohm 0.3ohm 0.5ohms etc.. with this type of device you can do direct lung inhale with a low nic juice.
For reference-
I vape a kayfun lite plus v2 which is a rebuildable tank atomizer with a 0.8 to 0.9 ohm single coil i use an 11mg juice and do mouth to lung. I also use a kanger subtank mini with the rebuildable single coil deck in, again i make a 0.8 to 0.9ohm single coil and use 11mg juice doing mouth to lung. When i use dripping atomizer i build a dual coil that comes out between 0.2 to 0.5ohms with a 0.3mg juice and i do direct lung inhales producing much more vapour.
I know that maybe very different for others but i though it might help some new users.
If anyone wants to add there vaping style to this please do so it will help others.
just reply with your atomizer type, coil setup single dual and ohms, nicotine level and type of inhale.
Peace matt.

I am using a 3mg juice in a Nano T tank with a 1.2 ohm head on an Aspire Pegasus at 22 watts, direct to lung with no probs.I did get a 6mg juice and as stated above it did make me cough like a good 'un!The juice is a 70/30 VG/PG juice, got some 95/5 VG/PG juice to try later!

This would explain why, when I jumped from my Nautilus mini with a 1.8ohm coil to my triton with 0.4ohm still using 8mg juice I get a cough. Cheers for the write up, a good read

There's also the caveat that you will look like a baby just as it takes a dump when you direct lung inhale.

While it is good to give the advice of reducing nicotine for a DLI (direct lung inhale) FyneMods, I don't think the mg/ml is correct. That would all depend on the user. Some new users vape 36mg when they start, and some start as low as 6mg. So it is "horses for courses". But, usually, a recommended 50% drop from MTL (mouth to lung) to DLI is a good idea. At least at first.
