I'm about to take the plunge into TC builds I've never worked with anything other than kanthal, I tend to use 28g twisted or 22g Clapton but going to try some nickel having never worked with it I'm wondering whether it's best to go thicker or thiner or go middle of the road

For a decent temperature reading, you need more than 6 loops per coil. I generally aim at 10 loops per coil, so a single coil set-up needs thicker wire than a dual coil, etc. But you may be restricted by deck size. Play with a coil calc to see what you would need. This is only my opinion, as that is what seems to give me a more consistant vape. Also, get tempered wire and use spaced coils, they work better for some reason. Don't make the coil glow before you wick it as it makes the wire too soft and will distort as you feed the wick in.
