So on the fasting days do you literally not eat anything? Men are allowed 600 calories on a fast day.

Hi thebishman, You will probably have more energy on Fast Days than you would on a normal day. Well that is what others who are on this diet are saying. I personally do not eat anything for a 24 hour period (6pm one day to 6pm the next day) and then I will have some of my 600 cals over a tea time and a supper time before going to bed. I do not return to a normal day food until breakfast the following day. Hi reefcat. I do not, at present, do any exercise. Medical problems and being very overweight has put paid to anything other than working in the garden and walking the dogs. However, as this is a long term commitment, in time I am hoping that the dogs legs will get shorter as I increase their walks!!! If I was 30 or 40 years younger, perhaps exercise would play a part in my quest, but jogging with a walking stick or zimmer, well, the mind boggles! Other diets, in the past, were merely used to reduce weight. The 5:2 diet promises so much more and anyone seriously thinking about trying it, should read the book by Dr. Michael Mosley before they embark on their venture.

I really don't agree with 5 eating then 2 not eating as you will be making your blood sugars yo yo up and down which is not a good thing todo. This was the reason i became diabetic or so the docs told me (not due to diet) i was on the road so somedays i would eat and not others and the constant yo yo ing finally buggerd me up. i would say a well balanced diet eating properly everyday will be a much better option imho.

Hi @broadblaster, I don't know about type one diabetes, but I am type 2 and, over the time I have been on this eating regime, my blood/sugar has stabilized and lowered completely and, probably for the first time since becoming diabetic, I am looking forward to my next Diabetic Clinic where I am hoping they will cut my diabetic medication. By the way, I do not take any diabetic medication during my Fast Days. I cleared that with my Diabetic Clinic before I embarked on this diet.
Like I said above, everyone is different and we all have preconceived ideas about diets etc. However, the 5:2 has been thought out by Doctors and Medical Institutes and there are now thousands of people world wide who swear by it.
But, unlike other diets that centre around clubs and classes, the 5:2 is very much something for the individual to enforce and while other firms are now jumping on the band wagon with various foods etc, these are not necessary and what you already have in your Pantry will more than cover anything you need.
The only Food you will need is Food for Thought. Get the book. Read the book. Decide what you want from this regime. If you need anything more there is an excellent forum to answer all your questions.

If you need anything more there is an excellent forum to answer all your questions. Fair play if it works and your docs are happy then go for it. But no it defiantly would not work for a type 1 diabetic as your whole eating regime is worked around your insulin injections/amounts and the type of work/exercise you do. So you could in theory end up having very bad hypos.

Good luck with your new way of eating. I myself had to make a lot of changes last year with my eating and changed to a lchf diet. In just under a year my diabetes is in remission according to the nurse and I'll be removed from the register. It hasn't been easy and I know things may change as I get older but I have made my diet a lifestyle change. I was also interested in the 5:2 way but with a largish family chose the other way. All the best and I'm sure it will do you good

Thanks Mrsmac. Yes @johanino, All of these are allowed. You can eat anything you fancy on the other 5 days. Even Deep Fried Mars Bars in Batter. However, most 5:2 followers use the TDEE formula when calculating what to eat during these 5 days. TDEE = Total Daily Energy Expenditure and this can be found on the Mayo Clinic website.

Have you got some links to any decent websites about this. Id like to research it Dr Michael Moseley invented the 5:2 diet. He has a book out and also made a documentary about it.

You are really best off buying the book "The Fast Diet" ISBN 978-1-78072-167-5
There is a lot of stuff on the internet about this diet, but that has all been put out since the book was published and you really need to get and read the book before you can make up your own mind whether to take onboard anything else you might hear about.
I have joined the Fast Diet Forum, but a lot of what other folks are saying or the way they are working the diet, just is not "my way".
However, my Total Energy Expenditure is such that I could probably eat just about anything on the 5 "normal days" and still lose weight. But once I get down to nearer my Target Weight I will probably be living on Asparagus and Broccoli once a day.
Intermittent fasting will do you no harm and more likely a whole lot of good, but do clear it with your Doctor before you begin.
