Never click on anything that you don't know - I never use MMS anyway so would not be receiving a Multimedia Message

What the article doesn't mention is that the malware can only install itself if you have changed the default setting of the "allow installation of apps from unknown sources" tick box .... or you could just set your default language to Russian.

Use an antivirus to help protect you, plenty of free ones in the play store, I have eset and so far not had any issue.
Best protection ( Never click on anything that you don't know ) good advice.

My awnser is don't have a smartphone, ditched mine years ago because of the poor battery life, don't need to be tied to charger everyday (thats for the Istick lol). I now have a £50 dual sim basic phone, does job and only charge it once a week.

MP We haven't got smartphones but our online banking now requires that we have them in order to carry out transactions online. This is a new thing so I went to our bank last week and asked the bank manager what we were supposed to do as we don't own any smartphones and she said "you'll have to buy them" I couldn't believe that the bank was literally making us buy smartphones or do away with our online banking facility. What is the world coming to I've now ordered 2 cheap ones from China (FT) as they are sooooooo expensive over here. Will use eset smart security to protect them. Already spoken to eset as they already cover my computer and my 'ol man's laptop so it won't cost too much more to put the 2 phones on my licence apparently. Got no idea how these smartphones work, how to set them up or anything lol. Am an old timer when it comes to a phone, just dial up and speak, send the odd text now and then haha.

That seems very odd toots - I'm struggling to see why you need a phone when I'm assuming up to now you have done it on your computer. Unless your bank is doing away with its browser based web portal (web page you use to log in and make transactions etc) and moving to an app based system only. Very strange indeed.

Are you in the UK. Why did you not tell them to stuff their services?

charliehorse & Richard46 I'm not in the UK. When we do online transactions up till now we have had a card with numbers on and each number has a security code beside it which we have had to state when finalising the transactions. They are doing away with the card system and now they are going to send the codes to our smartphones, that's why we need a smartphone. A normal phone can't receive these messages apparently. As for stuffing their services, it is extremely hard over here to get everything moved over to a new bank account. All standing orders, direct debits etc would go haywire for about 3 months - it's not unusual when changing banks for just about everything to get cut off, electricity, water, internet etc etc it causes so much hassle you wouldn't believe.

as long as the bank supply the sim card and all bank coms are free of tariff charges, it could work as long as the phone remained off unless you wish to authorise something, but with the growth of contact less charging of micro payments its not an ideal trend.

toots - Basically that sucks Guess you are on the lookout for a smartphone then. To be honest, as long as your not playing games on them or using gps functions etc the battery life isn't as bad as it sounds. Still a pain to have to fork out for one just for this.
