Ok i have cracked the case of the sony laptop battery pack which if i am lucky will hold 20mins worth of charge..
Its a 6 cell (18650) job 3 sets of 2 batteries
As i have failed to decypher the code stamped on the cells " QHT5AYF 134292" if i test each cell and discover only one or two are bad, matching the cells will be a bit too tricky, so i guess I should just replace all 6?
the battery pack was never great only good for a couple of hours use at its best and its stamped 4ah 10.8v so that means each cell is probably rated for 2000 mah?
there is a control circuit, will that be matched to the fitted battery power? and if i replace with say 3000mah batteries is that likely to upset the circuitry providing more power than expected and perhaps even blowing more sensitive components??
The extra life higher mah batteries would provide would be welcome but not at the expense of risking its control circuitry..
i had a look on the fastech site for "18650 tabbed" but the only options it returned were the brand ultrafire which i recall reading were dodgy for eciggys.
common sense tells me that acid flux and soldering heat may not be a good combination for 18650 +ve terminals so can anyone point me to a trusted source for tabbed 18650 2000mah batteries..
Thanks in advance

You can replace with higher mAh batteries, they will just take longer to charge. The charge circuitry will monitor the voltage of the cells not the current so imo should be OK.
I'd recommend tabbed batteries to avoid any potential insulation damage, have you had a look what Torchy or Ecolux Shop has to offer on Ebay?
You don't need high current just high capacity, some of the Panasonic GCR cells may suit.

I considered refurbing a Lenovo (Thinkpad) batt pack to assess the ease of doing a batt change. An original pack is about £120 +p&p or any similar dreamboat figure. Others of the style/fake type are about £40.
I can't open the case without destroying it. If I did get to change the batts its possible the sensing circuit won't perform and TBH I am not sure what its senses in total. Low volts certainly. Don't think this is a protection circuit in the normal cut off sense..dunno? Heat sense?
As I understand it these batteries are not tagged by the manufacturer(s), which is a worry of sorts. I have soldered to 18650's with a temp controlled iron and the solder spread and join is wide and very fast. Thats a flux cored solder..not a dab of flux as in plumbing. It is very easy to solder to them and surprised me.
I'm going to buy a new laptop I think as this game is a right ars* about.

Don't throw the batteries, an Ex member of this forum gave me 6 rescued from a laptop, they have been doing good service in my Vamo, not as good as new branded ones, but been good enough for free.

Thanks for all the input, google led me to a uk supplier of a double capacity battery pack ready to go off the shelf for £45 inc delivery boasting upto 5-6 hours of power .. as the individual cells cost more it had to be worth a punt..
