Hi,i have always wanted a red tree at the top of my garden but thought they were far to expensive for a numpty like me to take care of.My daughter bought me one for mothers day,she searched for a tree that stays red all seasons and paid £70 for a Japenese maple.Well,it got battered in the wind and hail storms and the leaves look a sorry sight and appear to be turning green.Does anyone know if its beyond reviving or have i killed already? Thanks in advance for any advice.

There are several different varieties of Japanese Maples (Acers). They are a slow growing deciduous tree. When the new leaves start to come through in the Spring they start off a shade of green (depending on the variety) & then turn various shades of red. I've moved this to the lounge for you Rosy

The leaves on any tree are a survival mechanism so I would say after the weather changes any change in leaf colour is expected but as Chrissie says some types do start of green turning to red in the summer google Acer for more info I have had mine for 9 years and live just of the pennies which gets some rough weather so I should think it will be ok

Thanks Queenie(my nickname on a friday night!),you have given me some hope that i havent killed it.Thing is i havent even planted it yet,its still in the tub it was bought in.Tinternet gives confusing advice ie,needs shade, likes the sun, dusnt like full sun, likes moist ground, got to have good draining.Running round the garden like a nutter trying to find where to put it,as you can tell,i dont do gardening. ???

Rosy, do you know the full name of the variety you have? My Acer is in a large tub & last spring was very dry (I usually only have to think about watering it in the summer). I thought I'd killed mine as all the leaves had shrivelled up & where dropping off I gave it a good watering & was so pleased to see new pale green leaves coming through a few days later

I did know the name but i have forgotton Chrissie,i know it is supposed to be red all year,i will try to find the tag. Queenie, mine is a tree, its grafted on to a green trunk so i think it could be reverting to its natural colour.I am going up to the garden center today to have a look at their others, will be taking it back if they have sold me a green one, lol.Nothat i dont like green but i wanted red. ???

I think your right they will definitely point you in the right direction, I just don't understand any of that fusing thing with trees I have fruit trees like that but luckily they haven't given me any grief get some bone meal ready for planting too it's great for feeding any newly planted tree
