As your children get older they will witness and experience far worse things from their peer group than seeing their parents vape. I presume the people that will not vape in front of children never consume any alcohol in front of children? True Karma. Don't want anyone to get me wrong because I wish we lived in an ideal world. There is a youth club by my house and some of the kids walk past our house vaping. If anyone is walking outside vaping, there are kids gonna see it being done.

Crikey Sandra, are kids vaping? Do they still smoke and drink? They are, also smoking as they pass, not seen them drinking though, but know they do because the mornings after youth club when I take the dogs out there are cans all over the place

Well, may be best if they are educated about the dangers of vaping in the home? I'm sure some of them probably think they have bought a toy ciggie from Tesco and don't understand about nicotine addiction

I also vape in front of my children 10 & 12, they have been telling me for a few years that they didn't want me to get cancer and die so are extremely happy that i have my e-cig. I also sat them down and explained the difference and how harmful it could be to them if they touched it.
The way I looked at it they were going to see me doing it sometime or later anyway so as long as I am not harming them and they know the dangers I wont hide it from them. I don't stop vaping when I'm out either (day's out would be a nightmare otherwise), so other children will see it too, if I'm asked I'll explain that I'm stopping smoking.

Yes, how do you explain the difference between normal chewing gum and nicotine gum? How do you explain these nicotine inhalers? I'm glad my children aren't little anymore. The amount of guilt trips put on decent parents now is terrible. How do you know a decent parent? They think about these issues and do what is right for them and their families

Thank you karma they are wise words. I feel I am a good parent you only have to see my children to see it . Like I said before it never occurred to me to hide this from them and have explained why I am doing it as I think been open and honest with your children is the right thing to do it's part of their education and prepares them for adulthood

I hid my smoking from my kids, I don't hide my vaping to the same degree now, they do see me do it now and again, but not that often. I've explained to my eldest who's 7, all about it and why I do it, the dangers and how she shouldn't touch anything vaping related, on pain of death. She badgered me for a year to stop smoking, even though she must have only seen me do it a few times at outside parties, so is happy I don't do it anymore.

I don't have children but my sister is 3 and my brother 2. Once my sister saw me vaping outside and kept asking me if she could have a go... I'm not sure how to explain it to her. I keep all my stuff high up in a locked cupboard

Yes, hypno, very young children like to imitate adults I'm sure 3 year olds have asked parents before tho if they could have a shot of their ciggie or a drink of their beer/wine Good to hear your stuff is safely locked up with little ones around

Kids aren't as daft as we sometimes presume, my children are young, but for years have been begging us to stop smoking, can only assume they have learnt the dangers at school, as I admittedly would have considered them too young to explain when they first came out with it. We didn't smoke in the house in front of them, for obvious reasons, however they knew we did, as we'd smoke in front of them outside, they hated us smoking. They now know we vape, and are very happy that we do. I've also taken every opportunity to explain to them how dangerous the liquid in the cupboard is, and how they should never ever touch the liquid or anything related to vaping as it is poisonous to touch for children, and could kill them. I'd rather be open and honest with them, as despite best efforts, mistakes can happen, and I wouldn't want them to find something left lying around by mistake, and then pick it up. We never hid our smoking, and we don't hide our vaping, the only concerns are second hand, not them copying what they see. If they are going to copy what they see, then they will see it elsewhere anyway. And as others have said, there are many other things we'd have to stop doing in front of them if we were to take that attitude. A similar subject is games, television, movies and books. I've not been one to shield them from things like Doctor who, Computer games etc, instead I have tried to make the difference between fiction and real life a very obvious line for them, actually sitting down and discussing the difference with them many times. I have no idea if this is the right way to go about it, I guess time will tell, but I knew what they didn't experience here, they'd experience away from their parents soon enough anyway, so I decided this was the way I wanted to go about it. As with the other thread, these are just my opinions, and the way I want to do things with my own, not suggesting anyone else is wrong, or telling them how to do things...

Oh I forgot to mention, the reason I picked out doctor who was that, despite it being a prime time show, a letter was issued to all parents by our normally very, very good school, warning about "the dangers of allowing our children to watch shows like Doctor Who!" BTW My kids love it, absolutely their favourite show, my lad is a bit of a Doctor Who geek.... and Daddy likes it too
