i got smart meters put in 6 months ago took them about 90 mins, no mess, they just replace your exsisting meters. the main benefit is that you dont need to give meter readings any more. all your bills are accurate.

I had both mine done a couple of months ago. I think its supposed to he compulsory eventually.
You get a gadget that you can put anywhere in the house that displays your consumption in gas and electric. It concerts it into pounds and pence so you can visually see what you using day to day. Can get quite addictive trying to make the figure smaller (or it might just be that im a sad twt and need to get a life lol)
The main appeal is accurate bills everytime.

I was dead against em, Big brother and all that. But since they put my gas meter outside and i live on the 3rd floor no more having to go out in the middle of the night or half way through cooking the tea to go and turn the gas back on cos its run out. And I can top up on line.

I got mine fitted last weekend for electricity only. The driver for me was to do away with estimated bills. They are supplied and fitted free of charge so there's not much not to like. I'm not obsessive about usage but having said that since getting it I've bought loads of 5w led light bulbs and removed lots of 50watt halogens or filament. I had 15 50watt bulbs in my kitchen I'm no working through the house changing all for leds where possible. I've been amazed that a 5W led lamp is as bright or brighter than a 50watt halogen or filament lamp.

I looked at taking up the offer of smart meters a little while ago, but discovered that the meters aren't compatible across energy suppliers. So if you wanted to switch supplier you had to get the meters changed. Apparently the problem was "being worked on ", so I don't know if this still applies.

As an aside, my wife changed our halogen bulbs in the bathroom for LED ones, and it's now fit for an inquisition, the light's so bright. They use around a 5th of the energy that a halogen bulb too, so it's a massive win!

Hardly free. The cost of them goes straight onto yours and everyone else's bills.
I believe they cost around £400 each.

I don't want one because iv got solar panels and when no one is in the house my meatier runs backwards keeping my bill down but with the smart meter it don't go backwards so I won't be saving money.

Experiment with different types of colour of l.e.d if its too bright.

As our bulbs fail around the house, we will be replacing with LEDs. We have a great little independent supplier who has all sorts of different LED bulbs with bayonet and screw fittings, different temperature light and colours. Fun times ahead!
