That's exactly what I do Lee I lay my picnic blanket down like a groundsheet - as you say the backing is waterproof but it also insulates somewhat obviously in my itty bitty tent it fills the whole thing!

Not even looking this far out, still not going to be freezing unless their is real freak weather.  My Rab Neutrino Endurance 200 sleeping bag keeps me warm enough in April in Snowdonia and cool enough at the last few VFs and packs down smaller than most coats, need a decent thermal sleeping mat as always.

19 have tent and anorak, my awning is not going to be fixed from last years wind damage on time, but we'll be fine.
