What is so maddening ghostrider1971 is that these reports never specify whether we are talking what the public think of as an e-cig battery (like an eGo 'pen') or a loose Li-ion cell, or even a box mod. As the Fire Investigator Jamie Lister said; "the footage highlights the dangers of storing batteries alongside metal objects, saying: "There does not need to be a fault with the battery, the problem is the incorrect storage of the batteries." A Li-ion battery (cell) loose in the pocket with metal objects is massively unsafe. Whereas a Li-ion cell inside a well designed mod is surely no more dangerous than a smartphone or similar. It would be helpful to know. Hard to see how an eGo with a tank on could manage such a thing. My vote goes to a mech or one of those terrible quality 100w subohm tube batt's.

Like djs said, there is nothing wrong with the batteries, it's the user. A bit of "Darwin's theory" in practice. People take batteries for granted, like are loaded guns. If used correctly, nobody comes to harm. Be reckless and they do damage.

Anyone who carries loose batts in their pocket along with other things deserves what they get.... Good on the fire bod for pointing out the user error...

I guess we are so used to batteries that we don't think about them, a battery is a battery. Most don't think about how the different chemistries change the danger potential.

I'm looking for ideas of how we persuade all retailers to always add a free plastic case with every battery sold.

ceedee - I think that's a great idea. I bought batteries from Fogstar recently - the batteries weren't great but the "free" plastic case was a welcome inclusion

I only buy batteries from TorchtheBatteryBoy and his have always come in a box. The sleeves cost less than 50p retail no doubt retailers could get them bulk for much less. www.fasttech.com/products/0/10011148/5200800-18650-battery-protective-silicone-sleeve-case-5Some half wit will still manage to lose them but it could well cut down on these events to the benefit of all of us including the battery sellers.

Is it a major problem with batteries going pop in peoples pocket? Yes a cover would stop it happening, but there isn't a parade of these things going bang.

The worrying thing i can see coming from this is airlines will stop allowing them on board. They wont put it down to the foolish etc, etc. they will just ban outright.
It needs to be drilled into folk, and retailers should bare a lot of the responsibility by only selling them in safety boxes, even flyers explaining the do's and do nots!

car147 - I agree absolutely. With the recent Flybe debacle with juice on planes on another thread, these "idiotic" battery incidents just give more ammunition to the airlines and more chances for the tobacco company anti-vaping lobbyists to continue to bleat loudly to those "upstairs" about "the dangers of evil vaping"

Put it into perspective - theres still far less of these incidents in umpty years than, say, samsung had with phones, and those batteries were built into the devices... It just shows there's less numpties that vape and don't look after their batteries than idiots buying over-priced phones

Well if morons injure themselves that their own fault, but when its shown on the news and written about in newspapers, that affects us all in greater restrictions possibly being imposed on us as vapers and the powers that be do not need any encouragement to jump on us for something else..Battery sellers should add a case to every battery order by default... the best of them do as said above.

Interesting about the battery cases thing.
We have a "go-to battery guy" in Oz (sorta like Torchy in the UK and Mooch in the US). Ours is known as "Supersports". I've only ever bought Vaping batteries from Supersports. Every battery I've ever received has always been shipped in a very usable secure plastic reusable case. Isn't this standard for all vendors?
=== As far as the exploding batteries goes: Unfortunately battery/charging failure reflects on what they are installed in. We've had a bunch of cheapie imported "hoverboards" (you know, the Segway without handlebars things that seem so popular nowdays) that have gone "poof" and often when charging. All the media is going nutzo over the boards but not the crap inadequate chargers/users/batteries/electronics installed to a very low price point (and, perhaps, not to our electrical standards) *shrug* What can you do? Aside, of course, from being personally responsible with your own gear and when offering advice to folk who ask.
