My first foray into an alternative operating system was Ubuntu, probably the most common starting place and as many boffins will tell you the most common mistake. Just a couple of negatives from many - it uses too much computer resources, it seems to be made to a bunch of programmers whose hobby is designing an endless stream of new versions of their operating systems with an allergy fixing bugs.
My requirements were for something fast and problem free. I really don't care for many of the bells and whistles such as transparrent windows. I plummed for Linux Lite. Very pleased, the only bug after 3 months is that it starts up with the alpha numeric key switched on.

If you are security paranoid, TailsElemental is okay, Ubuntu-mate and/or LXLE would be my two "favourites". Most can be run live, so there is no need to install anything to test them. Cheers I

I'd like to try this... how do you go about it? Any links to guides and processes? Watch some youtube reviews. Install Opera web browser on your current operating system and get the feel of that - it seems to be significantly better than Firefox for Linux. You may need to configure your memory stick for the download. You can try a new operating system by running it from the stick without installing it. If you have Windows 10, then creating a partion on your disc is suposed to be easy. On an old machine I recommend, try first and if you like it then avoid partioning by replacing the old operating system rather than installing it alongside. Print Installation Guide link I do all my online shopping on my aging Linux Lite laptop and get very litttle spam. Be prepared to put in some work getting to know the new system. Unless something isn't working avoid new drivers and stick with the ones that will be installed automatically with the operating system. I found the trials of installing and getting used to, were soon paid back. My computing skills are mixed - I can program in Pascal and work out a gating scheme for a parallel multiplier but I'm as baffled as most by many things eg currently trying to get the Firefox spellchecker on my Windows 10 PC to work.

It seems more responsive and you can customise just about everything.I do like the open source side of Android as well . I'm sure Android is based on a Linux kernel ain't it?

No nothing to do with unix/linux, Macs use a unix/linx kernel now, but Android is Android. Note while linux is fine, but you have to take all the responsibility for applying security patches that were automatic with windows. You can run Bash on Ubuntu on Windows in Windows 10 now if you want to try some linux apps before you wipe your PC, that's linux on windows not a virtual machine, or you can make a virtual machine to check tit out first.

I have often been persuaded towards the 'Mint' variety myself. Never had much joy with Ubuntu.
