is there a relatively simple way to test nicotine content of a premixed juice. i buy a well-known custard pre-mix juice and my first 500ml of 2 orders, the week before last week was very light in colour, this was changed for another which has arrived today and is equally light, the initial light one still has hardly changed in colour after at least 2 weeks steeping. these are all kept in a cold fridge (my beer fridge). im not a great one for strong flavours, never have been as many over strong flavours give me blinding headaches. i mix this pre-mix with an equal nic strength, non-flavoured mix and this gives me my ideal juice. my problem im not certain I can trust the nic strength of 16mg so ideally id like to test it for strength. generally i rebatch 300ml of this to create 600ml at a time, so dont really want to waste time and money batching up a mix thats far too weak for me. ive no reason other than the light colour and the initial one still having still hardly changed in colour, to make me think its low on nic, all other juice from the same place as been a chalk and cheese difference in colour of these two batches, bearing in mind there was a third batch in between these that looks as others have in the past. just to clarify batch 1 light, batch 2 normal and batch 3 light, batches 1 and 2 were 2 days apart. is this possible to test the nic strength?.

Nicotine shouldn't make any difference to the colour at all it's all down to steep time for custards. Plus they may have messed about with the recipe and changed a constituent of it.

There's a relatively simple nic test kit that used to be available (I haven't done a recent search to see whether anyone still stocks it).... the problem is however, once mixed with flavouring, the flavouring can alter the pH which is part of the basis of the simple nic test.... resulting in potentially inaccurate results.

They mightn't have but they could have changed one of the ingredients from diacetyl etc like others have done in the past. more than likely they've just sent you a slightly older batch which has been steeping longer. Some Custards can go a really dark brown if they're left steeping long enough.

HERE's the procedure and chemicals, etc. required. Puffin used to sell as a kit, but is showing out of stock.

smifee has nic testing equipment . . . . perhaps if you PM him ragjoy, he might be kind enough to help out. Although as Dave says with flavour added the results could be skewed. Steeping in a fridge, will always take longer as the cool temperatures slow down the oxidization process - which is why we all store base supplies in the freezer/fridge/coldest place possible to inhibit that. You would get a better idea leaving these mixes just in a cupboard for a few weeks before refrigerating them. That said, I have seen numerous quality control concerns from this particular source . . . . . .

Pure nicotine is colourless, ie clear. As it reacts with oxygen, it darkens. The clearer it is, the fresher. HTH BTW, nice table ragjoy

HTH BTW, nice table ragjoyhi tim, thanks for that, it was the middle batch being dark that threw me as much as anything, if it was the first one then fine but the middle one being much older juice just confused it all. the table as you probably know is ercol, its a hobby of mine i hand strip them from very dark to there natural state, then refinish to preserve. tables, arm chairs, dressers etc etc, i have quite a collection now, it is becoming very sought after.

If you want to preserve them even longer, then decant into glass bottles - preferably amber. ( I've a 100ml bottle of that custard, 12mg - which has been just in the cupboard for over a year now and it's a mid amber colour. ) I'm good thank you, spent too much money in the sales . . . . so nothing changes! Hope all is well with you and yours. xxx PS. I've an Ercol table and chairs bought in a local second hand shop - the wood looks ever so similar to yours!
