When you look at the total being overpaid to these so called stars, yes you are looking at a hospital being kept alive, or at least an A&E kept open. Which is more important? I know which I would vote for. Overpaid so called stars? Hospital A&E? I would quite happily have my TV licence reduced and give the money to the NHS.

Not new though, they will look at what similar ppl get paid in the sates and strive for near parity, not saying it is morally right just it is the world I have lived in all my life, probably always. Celb culture makes it far more unpalatable as it generally rewards people with nothing positive to offer humanity and I could far far far more excited about how that is negative than people getting the max from the boss they can get.

Bobsbeer I know you didn't want to say anything about Chris Evans, but can't sit on my hands any longer - how such an obnoxious git can be paid that much is criminal

There have always been stars that pull the crowds in. We are all guilty I see a film I have not heard of, read the description and am still undecided if I want to waste 90 mins of my life, then an actor or 2 I like in the cast sometimes changes my mind. I could go on, and on, like programs that have the presenters name in the title (makes no diff to the subject of the prog).... It is the way the world works, we stopped valuing creators and solvers in favour of tabloid sensationalists dross long ago, as said before vote with your wallet or live with it.

I wish we could VB. Sadly the government says we have to pay the BBC whether we like it or not if we want to watch TV. I agree it's the way the world is right now, but I can see that changing. People change things. Now it's out there the so called celebs will need to justify their place in the world for a change. That will be fun to watch. Although I can see Jeremy Clarkson giving it a good go. Chris Evans will run under the rock he came out from rather than justify his wages. Sack the lot of them, and watch a que form.

I see your point about voting with your wallet re the bbc, but just watch the good stuff (they still do a fair amount of that) is voting with your wallet, iPlayer and online stressing is more effective in that respect as it is automatic logged, viewing figures are their bottom line. I almost never watch live telly except for news, bbc gone severely down hill there, rather choose what and when to watch for years now. When I look at what's on it is generally an invitation to have a moan.

I record to hard drive (especially useful on ITV etc so I can fast forward through the ads) or use I-player etc.

Big confession here...it is more than four years since I have sat in front of me telly...if I really want to see something...'catch-up' or you tube fulfil my needs.

He's not to my taste but he's plainly pulling in a large audience for the BBC with his radio show and ultimately that's what dictates your worth to them, then of course that salary figure is last years i think so that would also include his salary for Top Gear.

The biggest surprise one for me was Gary Lineker.
Gary's all right, fair enough, but does he bring in twice as much revenue as Graham Norton and four times as much as Alex Jones.
Personally, I'd have them all in my office and say "quite frankly we'd be doing almost as well with someone less famous for 75k a year, so on your bike"
I think Eastenders can survive without Ian Beale f.g.s.
Does Dr Who lose all it's viewers when they change from a 500k Doctor to a less famous 200k Doctor? I doubt it.
Fair play mind you to Jeremy Vine for at least agreeing how lucky he is.
It is a stupid world, but replacing all these celebs with a bunch of mildly famous people for 75 grand a pop isn't gonna save much money and some of them are quite good at what they do.

Can't agree that you can just dump any old person in a role and still get the viewers. Look at what happened when they put Evans on Top Gear it stank and the public said it stank. It's not as simple as sticking someone in front of a camera with a mic. He has the top rated radio show and by a long way too so clearly people like him on the radio but put him on Top Gear and the ratings tanked and the people said it was specifically because of him it tanked. His popularity on the radio didn't translate to Top Gear so it seems there are other factors at play beyond just standing in front of a camera and reading an autocue. Meanwhile the old Top Gear boys had massive success on Amazon which suggests the right hosts do have an impact on ratings. Why do people give a monkey's who is presenting? Who knows but numbers don't lie.

I'm not suggesting that these people don't have talent, they clearly do, and some of them do a very good job. Lot's of people have talent and do an excellent job of what they do, but don't get anywhere near the payment these people do. Sadly it's the way the world has gone. The majority are happy to watch or listen to people on TV and radio and give them huge salaries. It's no different to footballers, and some are very skillful in what they do. They too are grossly overpaid for what they do. But at the end of the day all they are doing is kicking a bag of wind around, and TV/radio presenters just let that wind out. But what they are all doing is supposedly entertaining us as we go about our own supposed dreary and boring lives, scratching in the dirt to make ends meet. None of the so called celebs make life or death decisions. Yet some are in that position and paid £20k. Some take peoples liberty away on a daily basis, and I don't mean police, yet they are paid less than £40k. I could go on, but I suspect most will have got the point. Clearly fairness doesn't come into what people get paid, or the opposite would be true.
What it tells me is that us as human beings, we are very simple creatures who value entertainment more than we do life or liberty.
