I have at least three of the above that would work beautifully if only the threads for the tanks weren't too badly worn to register their presence.
Is there an idiot proof solution that doesn't involve wires and solder and technical stuff?

Is it the threads on the tanks worn or the threads the tanks screw into on the isticks? You could try screwing a heatsink into them Something like this www.fasttech.com/p/2443402

I think it's the threads that the tank screws into....

If your tanks screw onto the pico and come to a dead stop then your threads are ok but more than likely the positive pin in the centre has stuck in the down position due to dirt ‘n’ juice.
Firstly REMOVE the BATTERY from the device (5 click turn off does NOT disconnect power from the circuit board)
Take a cotton bud soaked in rubbing alcohol (classikool-eBay) and wipe around the o-ring that the pin seats in and then press on it with a small screwdriver or tweezers until a small moment is detected.
Dry and repeat as many times as necessary until the positive pin pushes down freely and springs back up. You could get away with a strong mix of washing-up liquid but as unlike rubbing alcohol, excess liquid will not evaporate, clean with the Pico upside down.

lynwlt are they 20W iSticks? If so the pin needs lifting on the iStick.

Follow shiny advice. If you can get some Isopropyl Alcohol ( higher percentage the better) it's great for cleaning threads and sticky mess and it evaporates very quickly so a quick wipe over or dribble down to the 510 pin and a bit of working the pin up and down should clean things up, and you won't have to worry about drying any liquid up. if you can get a set of needle nose pliers around the 510 pin you should be able to lift it. Alternatively you might be able to prise it up with a small screwdriver, but be careful not to damage to seal surrounding it.

Or just replace them with something better, for a few quid. You've done well to make them last this long.

Which if the threads are completely stripped out, will be your only option lynwlt . . . . same happened to one of my 20watters, VapingBad took a look at it and said there wasn't an option to replace with something more robust.

Yes, it's the threads that are shot... Any recommendations for alternatives?

Not sure which iStick you have at the moment lynwlt but I can highly recommend the Eleaf iStick Pico 75 watt. Under £17 with express epacket (7 days in transit) shipping upgrade on Fasttec. Chosing black/silver or SS colour will give the most wear resistant finish. Have a look at the few hundred reviews to see why it is my choice.

The Pico is great if you're happy using external batteries lynwlt, or if you prefer something with an internal then I'd suggest either of these: www.fasttech.com/products/3032/10011027/2305000 - 30watt Istick, upgraded from the ones you currently have, with a much improved 510 connection. www.fasttech.com/search?eleaf%20ipower - 80watt Ipower if you fancy something with a bit more oomphage and battery life.
