Alexia, brilliant idea with the nail varnish! I might nick it. Found a 12-slot lipstick/nailvarnish thingummywhotsit at Pound Shop. Bought 2. Perfect.

Hi crag and welcome to the forum! Well done, you, for switching to vaping. I'm a newbie too and the guys and gals on here have been so helpful and encouraging I'm sure some of the more experienced vapers will be along to help and answer any technical/supplies questions you have. One thing I would say is to make sure you drink plenty of water. Vaping is very dehydrating. Coffee and tea don't do the job because they're diuretics, so water's the thing. I've been vaping since end January and the last couple of weeks or so have noticed my joints stiffening up, these old hips a-creaking away quite painfully. So I hit Doctor Google and there it was - dehydration can cause creaky, painful joints! I've been vaping a lot (love it now I've got used to it) but only drinking tea. So now as well as giving up my main addiction, cigs, I'm cutting down on my other addiction, tea, and replacing with water. On the up side, my lungs and breathing are already noticeably improved. The only other thing I would add is that the technique of vaping is different to that of smoking a cigarette. In order to get a satisfying mouth to lung (MTL) inhalation with throat hit and flavour you need to (remembering to press the button!!) drag long, slow and gentle into your mouth, release button and inhale from mouth to lung, hold it a bit then exhale. Whereas with a cig the inhalation drag tends to be quicker and stronger. You need the slow and gentle to give the liquid chance to get properly vapourised by the atomiser. Doing it this way I find vaping even more satisfying than smoking. Hope this helps, and good luck on your new adventure PS. Watch out for shinyitis. You'll probably catch it. Most of us do...

ukulelegirl22 Welcome to the forum I'm still a new enough vaper to remember absolutely what it's like being new to all this stuff. In fact an awful lot of the threads on here are still gobbledegook to me (too many initials and numbers, I've no idea what they're talking about!). So - I'm going to offer some advice that a lot of members will probably hold up their hands in horror at, but here goes: First, the joyetech egoAIO looks fine but I watched the video and it all got a bit too techie for me. Replacing coils? For an out and out beginner? It may be called a starter kit but I wouldn't have been happy starting with it. Too fiddly. Also, you'd need 2 of them. That makes it a bit expensive. Why 2? Because what are you going to do when your battery needs charging? Reach for the B&H probably, which defeats the object of the exercise. I'm assuming that as an out and out beginner, like I was a few short weeks ago, you want something simple that you can just pick up and vape on and feel like you're having a smoke of tobacco. No messing around, no switches, no lights that change colour, no coils to change - just something to suck on and vape! If I'm right in my assumption then I would suggest you go to ecigarettedirect.co.uk, go to their e-cig kits and bundles page and get yourself the Halo Cigalike Bundle. (Ok, guys, I know, I know, so many people say to stay away from cigalikes, but honestly, these are great and I still use them as my instant goto fix.) These are way way nicer than the all in one disposable cigalikes you can get in supermarkets, garages and suchlike which are, as a lot of people point out, horrid! With the Halo ones you get 2 batteries, a charger and 5 cartridges. Just make sure to have your 2nd battery charged up and ready to go, so you can still vape while your first one is recharging. The cartridges are supposed to be disposable. But don't chuck 'em because you can refill them easy peasy (You Tube has videos) and that way the cartridges last for ages (I'm still refilling mine from January). I'd suggest 1.2% strength tobacco flavour, and while you're there get a bottle of the Halo Classic Virginia e-liquid so you can refill. This is the closest thing you'll get to a B&H smoke. Even easier than smoking because you don't even have to light it. And when you're done, just pop it in your pocket or handbag for the next time. It's slightly longer than a king size cig but still small enough to be convenient and unobtrusive. Those are the baby steps. By the time your cartridges start to give out you'll know whether vaping is for you or not (I do hope so!) and will probably be feeling a bit more adventurous. Then you can come back here for help from the fab people on this forum who will hold your hand through the toddler stage (sort of where I am now) and eventually into the wonderful world of mods and tanks and all sorts of exciting things that I'm just beginning to discover. Apologies if that's all too basic. It's just that I personally found that a 'starter kit' was a bit too scary for me. I needed a pre-starter kit! And I'm certainly not dissing advice you've already been given, cos the people on this forum are really helpful, supportive, friendly and knowledgeable, and so willing to share. Anyway, hope that helps. Just my two penn'orth from a total beginner's perspective.

DaveJ thanks for your very clear explanation and for the links. All the different terminology is confusing for us newbies but we'll get there! Hope you don't mind me joining in your thread, Alexia. It's good to know that I'm not the only one with this sort of question Hope you're enjoying your vaping adventure as much as I am.

Hi Alexia, let me add my welcome to all the others . Good question you've posed - I, too, am still using a variety of cheap clearomisers and wondering about upgrades so I'll be very interested to see recommendations from the more experienced members. You've come to a great place, the members of this forum have been so friendly, helpful and supportive to me as a newbie, I'm sure you'll get loads of good advice.

Well that was interesting. Learned a lot. 1. Oh my gosh that VG is gloopy stuff! Even tho the label says it's aqueous vg I ended up having to chop the narrow end off a plastic pipette in order to suck it up and squirt it out. 2. measuring by weight is a lot easier than syringes. The little scales are fab (sorry, can't link to them because I'm a numpty like that, but they were recommended and linked to Amazon by some lovely person on this forum somewhere in mixology.) 3. Just nic, pg and vg does need a little bit of steeping. I tried it straight off and it was horrid, nothing like the ready made flavourless I've used. Also I used 2.4% nic (my usual is 1.2) intending it for those times when I'm craving a smoke. Nearly blew my head off and ripped my throat out (apologies to those with a vivid pictorial imagination). Not nice. However, 8 hours later it has improved to the point of being vapable. Definitely could do with a drop of flavour though. Thought I might try a drop of Flavour Art's Wizard enhancer stuff to begin with. But it's all good, I'm just playing at this stage and if it ends up down the sink it's ok (what's a few drops matter when I have 2 litres stashed in the freezer and only myself to mix for? It's called 'NABLE' - Nicotine Aquisition Beyond Life Expectancy.) 4. I'm not intending to mix up a load of base and then add flavours to it. As Perpetua pointed out, that would muck up my proportions - and mess with my Virgo-OCD tendencies. But when I've found the pg/vg ratio I'm happy vaping at I'll then feed those numbers into the calculator (I'm using e-liquid-recipes.com because it gives grams as well as mls and I can understand it) along with flavours, nic, etc., and do what the calculator tells me. 5. The reason I think I might need something other than 50:50, which is what I mostly vape at, is because altho I'm happy with the throat hit and vapour production I'm finding that my lungs feel a bit tight. Now this could be a slight reaction to pg, or it could be the fact that I have asthma and a cat and a dusty house and an un-hoovered carpet... I have to eliminate possible culprits (apart from the cat, I could never eliminate my cat!) and playing at mixology first is more fun than the other options. 6. I'm keeping notes. So if ('when' - think positive) I hit on the magic mix for my tastes I'll be able to replicate it. And so endeth my first baby steps into mixology. Thank you all for your collective wisdoms. Real World stuff claims me tomorrow and Friday but come the weekend I'll be cackling over my cauldron again. Well, small plastic beaker actually.

Brilliant! Thanks everybody. Oh, and I do intend to get into flavours fairly soon - I have a collection of 12 lined up like little soldiers standing to attention awaiting orders. But I wanted to establish my preferred base ratios first. After all, mixing your own is all about personalisation, innit? Oh how I Lurve a new learning curve (and I love the smileys on this forum)

Love the mixer! Actually, I quite like vaping unflavoured, I find it pleasant and smooth and surprisingly close to a rollup. Thanks for quick response.

So according to suggestions from all over this board (thank you thank you thank you) I've got my stuff together and the final bit of my mixing kit is out for delivery today (scales - I'm starting by doing it by weight) so I'm about to roll up my sleeves and mix my first potions. I'm cackling because this feels so beautifully witchy. I need to find a comfortable PG:VG ratio for my personal tastes; so far all my bought mixes are 50:50 or 60:40 (where I can tell. The bottles don't always say.) I've found a calculator that suits. Worked out my first two recipes. So here's the question: I'm mixing these flavourless, ie. just nic, VG and PG. Does it need to steep, or is steeping only necessary when you've put flavourings in? Thanks!

Ok. Thanks. So as per instructions I'm now heading over to Mixology to ask an incredibly dumb newbie question!

To everyone who's responded - thank you so much! All the hints and tips, well, I'm already doing a lot of them and will put them all into practice. I'm even more determined now, after all your encouragement, to Beat the Baccy! It's all the 'well done' and 'you're doing great' and 'keep it up you'll get there' kind of stuff that means so much. I don't have much support from people I know, not that they aren't pleased I'm giving up, just that they don't really understand the journey, so to speak. My partner has never smoked so, much as he wants to be supportive he just has no idea what it's like so is fairly low-key about it all. Most of my friends are non-smokers also. 2 of them smoke but they are the lucky ones, 'social smokers' who aren't addicted and who can smoke a few then not bother for days or weeks on end. Oh, how I wish! And I have 2 friends who are ex-smokers, whom I admire enormously because both did it the hard way (one cold turkey, took her 3 years before she stopped craving poor love, and the other who became addicted to the chewing gum and again, it took her a couple of years to get off it). Neither of them have much truck with vaping and regard it as somehow cheating, or still-smoking-really-because-of-the-nicotine. I haven't the energy to educate them. As for my little forays up into the loft (which will get fewer and fewer until they cease, I promise me)... nobody in my real world knows about that. Let's just say what happens in the loft stays in the loft, we don't talk about the loft. Nuff said. Hey! I've just discovered that RY4 (came in the post today) squirted into an old carto that still had some 'classic virginia' remnants in it, tastes just like my roll ups. OMG I've found Nirvana! Question: will I ever be able to replicate it? Dunno. Not today's problem. Today I might actually be able to avoid going up to the loft...
