Hello lovelies... I feel bad for being such a crap, irregular forumite on such a wonderful forum, especially when you've all been fab beyond words helping me out. I don't mean to be one of these types who just shows up, demands your wisdom, picks your brains and then rides off into the sunset in a triumphant haze of Arctic Cherry. Just been chaotic here and pretty depressing. My mum has dementia and bipolar disorder, and lately she's been going through a particularly bad period. She's up all night, or else she's having nightmares, some days she really doesn't have a clue who I am, or else she's delusional and convinced I'm trying to poison her, other days she's high as a kite, sprinting down the street in her nightdress, a few hours later she might be really withdrawn and borderline catatonic. I think it's all the disruption with travelling back to the UK after many months away, I tried to eliminate all the stress for her, but hey, 1)I'm generally crap at organising stuff, and 2)no matter how much planning you do, the evil cock-up fairy seems to jump out of nowhere and wack you senseless with her wand. Mum's been hospitalised so many times but it's been several years since she's seen the inside of a ward and I try my damnedest to keep her out because, honestly, I think if she was sectioned again or ended up in a home it would just about kill her. The tender mercies of many in the 'caring' profession is a long essay in itself... probably a lot of folks here have experienced some of it. Anyway, I'm blabbering. She's in bed now, though! Not daring to hope too much, but it's been a while since I heard anything on the baby monitor, so fingers crossed she's sleeping and not planning her next bid to find the car keys or terrorise the neighbours. On the vaping front - well, been puffing on a few of the nasty analogues, must be honest. But I still really love my Riva and it's been a godsend in times of dire stress... don't like to imagine just how many cigarettes I'd have got through in the last month without it. But I haven't really had above 5 a day even at the worst times amazingly enough, and I'm so, so pleased I took all your advice and got it. Sad but true: I'm considering getting another Riva kit, just so I can have plenty of them charged up and readily to hand, whatever the situation! Very sincere thanks again xxx

Did I mention I love you all? And I love my Riva?
Yes? Well, worth saying twice! Thank you all so much again!

I am home! After travel cock-ups and assorted butt-clenching crises and episodes of sheer farcical horror galore... and no internet access at Premier Inn!! Up to my eyeballs in unpacking chaos, dealing with forgotten MOT fallout, burst pipe, toilet bowl that has decided to migrate across the bathroom floor... and a rat in the garage, good gawd. And if I can stop bouncing in my seat for a moment, let me just say the following: 1) I LOVE YOU ALL! 2) I LOVE MY RIVA! 3) I LOVE YOU MR. GRIZWALD! Oh, and Jason at vapeescape! Will try to post some coherency when things calm down... if ever!

Daveyboy - what a gent, thank you for that lovely offer! If it's in limited supply and it's as fab as it sounds, I'd feel bad sapping your stash, and a steeped sample at that, especially when I'm going to have more little bottles coming at me soon than I have brain cells. Or cartomisers! Would hate to leave you short, but that's such a kind gesture, thank you. You should drop me your addy so I can mail you some kind of baked goods the next time I get jiggy in the kitchen. Very occasionally the planets align nicely and I produce something that doesn't just stick to the roof of the oven. It'll probably reach you in a pile of crumbs, but I can try! kibbster - sometimes feeling a bit dirty can be rather nice. Ahem. Think I still have that defiant, immature streak about smoking in public... whenever anyone says something to me, just makes me more determined to light up another one. Was sitting on a sunny park bench one afternoon, minding my own business, fag in one hand, messily munching a bag of walker's salt & vinegar at the same time (multi-tasking slob mode) when a random perky dog-walker speeds by and nods at me "that'll kill you, you know." I was kinda stunned dumb for a few seconds, then yelled after him "the saturated fat or the fag or the UV bloody rays?!" rosco - I'm eager to get stuck in! I mean, I'm hopeful, but trying not to be too hopeful. I watched a pretty sobering video review on youtube last night from a newbie vaper who'd just received a Riva kit and he gave a great overview, said it did exactly what it was meant to, but he said he just didn't enjoy the flavour and couldn't imagine it ever replacing analogues for him. I guess it's not for everybody, so I've got to be prepared and maybe tone down the expectations a bit... but fingers crossed, really hope it's something I can enjoy. romelee - got to thank you for that great guide to the Riva. I've got it printed out and at the ready, going to put it carefully in my hand luggage so I can whip it out in the wee small hours at Premier Inn. And yes, I'm a total mentholhead, really hoping the HS Menthol Sensation lives up to its billing! Andy - if the vaping goes well, I'd really love to get clued up about the mixing business myself in the future. The idea of blending delicious potions in dinky bottles is really calling to my inner cauldron-stirring hag. I do a lot of baking, so I have lots of extracts and essences in the food cupboard, don't know if someday they could come in useful for flavouring vape juices? Your black & white blend sounds gorgeous, by the way. Endless mixing possibilities... I really want to have a go myself! Sad that I'm still smoking the analogues here, not even really enjoying them anymore, to be honest. But hopefully this is my last week of tobacco dependency and I get rid of the damn things for good. Almost looking forward to getting back to northern Ireland, just to get my parcel. If only it wasn't 3 degrees.

Cheers, Davey! I've a talent for getting myself into all kinds of embarrassing trouble. Last thing I need is to be forcibly ejected from a hotel mid-vape! I remember nervously hanging out of a 4th floor bedroom one particularly frigid night when I couldn't face freezing my bits off outside, so I hauled the armchair over to this window that only opened halfway and squeezed as far out as I could so I was basically leaning my elbows on the roof slates while I snuck a fag. Kept expecting the alarms to go off at any second, madly wafting my arms around in what must have resembled some bizarre aerial breaststroke. Then a dog on the street below suddenly started barking like crazy and I tried to jerk backwards in a panic, didn't realise that my fat arse was pretty much wedged secure, so I wacked my shoulders on the glass and ended up scraping my dress right back over my head, arms pinioned and still clutching the lit fag. Finished up in a tumble on the bedroom floor, hooded in a burnt dress and writhing around trying to make sure the butt was out. So much for a stress-busting smoke! This vaping business all all sounds rather wonderful, being able to sit in the warmth and blow big clouds of Ferrero Rocher smelling vapour and the like everywhere. Like you say, though, shouldn't get my hopes up too much that it can magically just erase a cig habit that's been getting a deeper grip on me every day for, crikey, nearly 20 years now. I've only ever smoked menthols, same brand for years... can't stomach ordinary cigs and I think I need a big throat hit, so I've no idea if any of these lovely-sounding juices will hit the spot or not. At the end of the day, though, if vaping can even just help me cut the cig habit in half, I'd be happy. Won't hope for miracles, but any improvement is good news. GVC...GVC??!! You had me hopping around there for a good while! Then the rusty cogs suddenly clicked (see, I've been doing my fevered forum reading, I have) and, I -think- you are referring to the apparent nectar of the gods that is Grant's Vanilla Custard? I read a thread on here and the cult following almost made me kinda nervous. Really sounded like incredibly addictive stuff. I wonder what in the bejesus he puts in it?! I see his site is frozen at the moment - overwhelmed with orders I guess, so I'll to wait to get my sample. Steeping sounds frustrating! Sorry for daft newb questions, but do you really need to do it with every juice, they all benefit from kind of... maturing? You couldn't accelerate the process by, say, leaving them in direct warm sunlight, or very gently heating the bottles in water? And if they mature can they get a bit past it once they've been opened? I guess if there's a steeping sweet spot you could overdo it? Whole wide world of wisdom to be plucked and plumbed out here. Feel like I know nothing! Glanced through another thread tonight in Reviews that mentioned U wicks (?!) and more about the ohms and resistances and hits that sounded knee-knockingly good. Going to be a big, exciting learning curve! )

Sounds like you have a nicely pampered pooch, Mark.
Looks like a fab set for experimenting with. I guess if you weren't all that fussed on one you could try improving it by mixing it with something you liked or creating a barmy concoction on the off chance of striking vape gold? Think I'll definitely try this kit once I've had a chance to wade through the 13 or so samplers I ordered in a frenzy from VE. Should you always use a fresh cartomiser for each flavour? I'm clueless.

I haven't even vaped yet, but I'm going to have to try this. Jam and almonds and cakeiness? By heck, that sounds good! Is it like a strawberry jam, or raspberry or just generic fruity goodness? Daft newb question: does vaping this kind of thing mean you're perpetually hungry and end up going on sugar rampages? Not sure my poor old teeth could handle any more abuse as it is...!

The deed is done!! Big fat order placed earlier today and thank gawd for that. No more circular worry whizzing round in my gerbil wheel brain.
I've followed all your kind advice and put the driving concerns on ice until I try out the Riva. If necessary I can always try the recommended passthrough/smaller battery.
Here's what finally ended up in the basket (it kept being wiped before I could checkout due to repeated dithering). Got there in the end, though and hopefully haven't forgotten anything!
Riva 1100 Kit The VE Riva 1100 Deluxe Kit Stainless Steel VE151 Stainless Steel Cartomisers Boge 510 Standard Resistance (5) Stainless Steel VE145 Stainless Steel Cartomisers Vision Ego Rainbow V3 Rebuildable Clear 2.8ohm VE388 Clear 2.8ohm HS Premium HS Menthol Sensation 10ml 24mg (High) VE252 Drip Tips Ribbon Drip Tips Green VE308 Green Chargers Dual USB Car Charger VE89 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Apple 'n' Pear Torte VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Krazy Karamel VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Arctic Cherry VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Choco Haze VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Karoffee Kick VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Menthol Tabac VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Toffee Popcorn VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Gingerbread VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Banoffee Cream VE292 Grizwald's 5ml Samplers Cocomel VE292 5ml Samplers (18mg) Fruit Mix VE368 5ml Samplers (18mg) Flue Cured VE368 5ml Samplers (18mg) HS Menthol Sensation VE368 5ml Samplers (18mg) HS Delight VE368
Yes, went thoroughly mental with the juices. They all sounded too good.
You've all been magnificent, thank you! Really excited to get my hands on the parcel when I get back. Just got an email to say that it's already been dispatched. Talk about great service. It's a bit awkward after we fly home, though... we're booked into a Premier Inn for a few nights before a pretty long drive, just to break the journey up. Any ex smokers might remember just how long and dreary nights in hotels can be, shivering in carparks at 2am with your cigs. So I'm thinking a 100 mile round trip to grab my parcel and get back to the hotel might be worth it.
Is it definitely okay to vape yourself senseless in a bedroom at Premier Inn? I won't set off any sensors or anything and get slung out?

So much great advice and generous tips, thank you for each and every one. I'm soaking it all up like a sponge... even taking notes! I'd give you all a big chunk of chocolate cake if I could. Made one today and... it's lethal. Although anything slathered in a ganache containing half a pound of 90% black choc, half a pound of butter and half a pint of cream is quite possibly illegal in several jurisdictions. Not sure if it's death by chocolate cake that's made me feel funny tonight or the fact that I put the tin lid on it by overdosing on pork crackling at dinner. But I mean, what are you to do when a very kindly hostess has made a lovely meal and repeatedly wafts a giant plate of perfectly crispy, salty piggy fat under your nose? Would've been rude not to, right? But now I feel like an army of gumbooted midgets is trampling through my guts. Midgets with pitchforks. Serves me right. Sorry, food digression. Another dire addiction. Hmm, wonder if there's a crackling flavoured vape juice?! I'm going to have to ask for more help here - something struck me today. Moment of panic stuck in traffic while studying a cyclist's bum. Nothing new there, but I forgot to ask: can I still safely vape when I'm driving??! Well, relatively safely? Don't know how I overlooked this - I'd forgotten just how many cigs I speed through behind the wheel. Not sure I could handle a tailback or roadworks or Bradley-Wiggins-Wannabes or the bone-chilling prospect of parallel parking without something to drag on heavily. Is the Riva appropriate or do I need to quickly find a small back-up I can just keep in the car? Something cig-alike like this maybe... www.miragecigarettes.co.uk/shop/goldstar-electronic-2-cigarette-kit.htmlI've held off placing the Vape Escape order for the moment (not foot-dragging, still going for the Riva + accessories, and will still meet freezer deadline, I swear it!) in case there's something better you'd recommend as an additional driving vape on the VE website. Or maybe I'm fretting unnecessarily here. Just don't want to add any further peril to my already woeful, white-knuckle driving skills by trying to handle something that's distracting or too unwieldy to be safe. I think I need a PV I can still hold in the same hand as the steering wheel. The comfort clench factor between the fingers. Just scanned google for driving + vaping and I saw a solution mentioned 'ego twist powering an imist.' I can see both parts on VE. Any driving vapers with a better alternative? I'll be back in Northern Ireland in just over a week, so I'm hoping I can have everything I'll need waiting for me and zero excuses not to get stuck in with the vaping.

Irish - So good to hear you could adjust the level and find the right hit for you. I'm braced for headaches, probably more from stress/expecting the worse than anything. Anadin on standby! Think I'll start with the sampler bottles, they're all 18mg so if they're too strong... do you know if you could use a pipette to add water to a cartomiser, or would that be a quick way to wreck your vaper? Just not sure how you'd notch down the nicotine strength otherwise, short of just hanging tight and waiting on a new order. Maybe I should order some 0mg nicotine juice just so I'll have something to drip in there if I need it?
Romelee - I'll just have to explore and decide myself! All quite exciting, really. I've got all your recommendations in my basket and I am currently going a little nuts ordering samples of 'Grizwald's Gourmet' range. Toffee popcorn, Karoffee, Jamaican Fruit Punch, Cocomel! All sound too irresistible to someone with the sweet tooth from hell. Someone please get a hold of me before I bankrupt myself here...!
This is probably a daft question, but drip tips, do they make much difference which one you go for? Should I order a few 501 alternatives so I can find something that feels nice... tactile feel of it is important to me. Hmm.

You're all really lovely, aren't you. But I said that already. Well, it's true. Definite cut above any forum I've seen around, anyway.
loobey - I'm so relieved to hear you say you combined the two (smoking and vaping) until you weened yourself off the bad'uns. That was my plan, but I thought maybe it would be self-sabotage if I didn't throw myself into vaping 100%. If you managed to do it after 50 years, I'm hoping I can muster a bit of will power, too. See, there's certain cigs during the day that I really enjoy, then there's the main bulk that are just habit, compulsion, stress and all that. The cig in the morning (or 3) with a cuppa, and the cig after dinner... those are the ones I really enjoy, if that makes sense. Do you reckon I could maybe say to myself 'ok, Isla, you weak turnip, you can have your 5 cancer sticks for the times when you really enjoy them and aren't just smoking them on zombie mode, so long as you commit to vaping for the rest of the day.' Decent plan or silly idea?
flip - thank you for the alert on hydration, I had no idea. Hope this isn't too unpleasant a question, but do you find that vaping still gives you the same kind of phlegm and racking cough you get from cigs? I was wondering if the VG in the juices was any kind of expectorant or irritant. Bit angsted by a recent article on the beeb news website about 'concerns over e-cigs safety.' I mean, can't for the life of me see how they couldn't help but be a safer improvement on ingesting a load of tar and carcinogens, but I suppose the unregulated and unchecked aspect of juices (and the potentially high nicotine consumption) is a little iffy. Then again, it's probably another tobacco lobby smokescreen to protect their patch. The treasury can't be happy about lost taxes either... many powerful vested interests at work in discrediting e-cigs, I guess?
By the way, flip, did you find you had any side-effects from absorbing nicotine through vaping? I'd be curious to hear vapers' experiences on this in general. Heard a few mentions of rapid heartbeat and headaches from high nicotine doses while people are still finding the right level for them. I have a seriously addictive personality and I'm a bit concerned that I'd run through so much juice initially that I'd end up wired to the eyeballs and an even bigger slavering nicotine maniac than ever.
dee- that is sage advice. There's so many ways to talk yourself out of a change, isn't there. Set myself a deadline, though. Going to order a kit within the next 36 hours or submit to a fate worse than death. Yes, I'm going to defrost the freezer. If that doesn't get me moving, nothing will!
sjs - Oooh, another vote for the tasty looking Ego-T, eh? Wish the vendor was on the forum list here, but it doesn't imply they're dodgy if it's not... or does it? I was hoping to order a good few samples of juice, not sure if it's a wise idea to get the same flavour in several different nicotine strengths, would there be a definite difference between, say, 18mg and 24mg? Better idea to start off low and increase if necessary? Do you have a favourite retailer for juices in general, or a particular flavour you swear by? I've seen that the mysterious elixir that is 'Grant's Vanilla Custard' has a starry-eyed band of devotees on here. So many questions, I feel like that irritating brat in the back of the car on a long journey. Sorry!
Kibbster - that is a lovely, reassuring post, thank you. I have a few friends who smoke and I didn't want to feel like the ghost at the banquet clutching my PV and mournfully ogling their regulars. Think I'll still huddle with them in the cold out of solidarity, though! Do you personally feel at ease vaping in public places like cafes and such? And another vote for the Riva... crikey. Cult following. Where there's vape there's fire, I guess... it's going to have to be the Riva, isn't it.
Romelee - that's really interesting about the cartomiser v clearomiser preference. What would you say are the biggest differences in how the two vape? The clearomiser seems to win on aesthetics, and it just looks like it would keep my inner kid happy seeing how much juice was left and generally having something interesting to look at and twiddle with and focus on. I have no idea how the two compare in terms of things like flavour and throat hit and all that. Does the clearomiser give a more intense hit, would you run through juice more quickly with them? Thank you very much for suggesting a good kit for me. I think I'm going to order exactly that. So you don't think that the Vision adds anything extra for a newb that the Riva wouldn't cover?
Ros- You'd go for the Riva, too, then? I was only dithering because I really liked the look of your link to the Ego-T with its clearomisers and charger. As you say, though, best to try the cartomisers as well. And I can use my wee phone charger? Excellent! ...you know, I think the decision's made. The Riva. Think I can put the snowsuit, crampons and ice pick away and avoid the freezer for another day, thank god! Thank you all so much for the wonderful help. If there are any extra bits and pieces you think I should add to the order, let me know. Any particular recommendations for juices (especially menthol) would be appreciated, too. I'll get on to Vape Escape and start putting it all in the basket and get it ordered by tonight...

Hello Lainey, what kit did you end up going for, if it's not too nosy a question? Hope it's a great experience, whatever you've chosen. I'm very interested to read fellow newcomers' experiences with vaping... let us know how it goes and all the juicy details!

Hello Cath, fellow newb here too. Best of all luck in quitting - about to take the plunge myself, too, probably with a Riva, still shillyshallying over details. Like you, confused but excited about the whole juice array, but I'll be happy if I can just ferret out a good menthol flavour.
Must say, Vanilla Custard sounds interesting, though!

Crikey, you're all lovely. Many thanks for such a warm welcome! It's like a flashmob hug from the Venerable Society of Good Human Beings. I have no excuses now, not with all this support. My last hope was that you'd all be gits!
I had a feeling you'd all tell me to get over the lookalike hang-up. You're right, I know, the only reason that I'm still a bit caught on the idea is my previous success quitting (way back before the advent of vaping) with a little plastic cigarette. It didn't even have a cartridge, but in times of dire need I had something to twiddle with between the two familiar fingers. I think the psychological and stupid aesthetic addiction probably outweighs the physical cravings, although I do inhale very deeply and hold it in and exhale through my nose, so I may be far more of a nicotine junkie than I even realise. Think you've managed to talk me out of a lookalike, though. It's pointless if I can't use it in the long term. Maybe I need to adjust the thinking and stop expecting the whole quitting process to be hell, and instead focus on adopting an enjoyable vaping habit instead. So it makes sense to get something that gives a good vape.
...Another 10 or so panicky fags later and I've carefully snuffled out every link and recommendation (thank you!!) - now I'm a bit torn. Vape Escape sounds like the firm favourite and there's a lot of votes for the Riva. Some mentions for the Vision 1000 Ultimate, too. And Ros's Vapeland Ego-T CE5 looks really tempting with great reviews! I'm wondering if the Ego-T is a little too good to be true at that price...? I mean, there's even a wall charger included, and I'll need that as I only have a laptop and I don't think you can reliably charge via USB on one.
Hmm. Vapeland is looking good, I can't see it on the forum's list of vendors, though. I guess I'd be an eejit to ignore so many recommendations for the Riva and Jason at VE? Is there a big difference in quality/vaping experience between the two options? Or another possibility: should I just take the plunge and go for the Vision 1000 Ultimate... in for a penny, in for a pound? FreedomVape looks like it has some gorgeous juices, too...
Going to have to quit nancying around soon and just order one of those 3 options. Many thanks to everyone for narrowing the field for me!
