In the interest of full disclosure, I suppose I should update this.

Just before packaging the device up to return to FT, I thought I'd have a final test. I shook it, banged it on the desk, against the wall - all technical troubleshooting stuff. Anyway, in the middle of manhandling it, I squeezed the bottom battery door inwards very hard, and the display lit up. A few more exploratory squeezes revealed that one side of the flap wasn't making contact with the battery. I rolled up some tinfoil into a small ball and trapped it between the battery and the door, and the bloody thing has been working faultlessly ever since. I guess button-topped batteries would also work.

I contacted Fasttech and rather sheepishly explained that my previous rant to them might have been a tad premature. They responded politely with a gift certificate for $2. They stopped short of suggesting that I put it towards a butt-plug or anything else I could roughly shove up my bottom, but I could tell that's what they were thinking.

Yes, I've just bagged 100mls of madeleine. I've also got a bottle of pancake, but not used it yet - it has an unusual smell and I haven't decided if that's a good thing or not. Let me know what you think about it.
