I used to leave caps off but when I was chatting to the maker of snake oil and he said this in his email:

Also I saw someone mention cap off !! I would recommend you steep with the CAP ON !!!!! - PG & VG is very hygroscopic so leaving the cap off will introduce moisture from the air, which will dilute the juice. It will oxidise the juice quicker with cap off, but the dilution is more of a problem.

So yes, shoving them away and *trying* to forget about them is now my steeping system!
