Oh Malibu, you're really trying to do your best #grouphug# I would probably go with the vet's advice if I were you! If you want more help then instead of the RSPCA why don't you get in touch with the RSPCB www.rspb.org.uk/

I'll go and have a look at the link see what I can do. I couldn't leave it out there. Actually I dont hold out a lot of hope . It seems to have a small wound. but lots of flies were around I can't leave it out there either in or out of a box.

The RSPB says The RSPB does not run bird hospitals or a rescue service. The RSPCA (England and Wales), SSPCA (Scotland) and USPCA (Northern Ireland) are the national charities that help and advise on sick and injured birds and animals.
....and I've been to the rspca site which told me to ring the vet.

You're doing your best, if the bird is injured then perhaps the parent will not come back for it. Law of the jungle I'm afraid I'd make it comfy in a box and try to keep the cat away, not much else that you can do. If it's wounded and there are flies around it sounds like nature will take it's course

Ive decided to leave it in the box indoors, less stressful for the bird either way. We will see what tomorrow brings and drive to the vets if need be.

The rspca I have found to be totally useless in my dealings with them and I've had a few. By the sounds of it, it ain't gonna survive. I wouldn't want to see it in pain and you'll see if it starts to suffer. What about worms, will it eat small insects or anything? Is it taking food from you?

Awww poor little thing. You may have been better to leave it where it was or to put it under a hedge. Problem is..once you have handled a chick, the parent birds will disown it. Really hope it perks up

I couldnt leave it, it was sitting on the patio, sooty would have come home and worried it to death. The woman from work just turned up for the new DSE901 set that I was going to sell her, before she came I had decided I couldn't sell something that I didn't think was very good and she could have it for nowt. I gave her the 901 and a baby chick and a few juices to try. She lives in the country and also the farm next door tends to take things in. It may not survive but I feel so much happier now.

We had a baby rook fall down our chimney from a nest that had been set up there. For two days I was in agony hearing this thing struggle, flapping about trying to get out. In the end I couldn't leave it any longer. Out came the angle grinder and a great big hole in our chimney breast was made. I could see the bird and it looked bloody big. So I left the bedroom window open and hoped it made its own way out from there. Anyway, an hour or so later I go back to the bedroom, and wondered if it had left yet, and I see little footprints that had appeared on our dresser next to window from the dust caused by angle grinder and I look down and see the baby rook now sitting on our fence. I grabbed my phone ran down stairs and took a picture of it sat on the fence. I'll show it later. As well as the chimney breast that i ripped open. Anyway, the bird flew up in the air to a tree but then came back and landed on the lawn and Rex our greyhound killed it.

Pleasant with rather a distressing ending jay Apologies malibu, I wasn't try to say you hadn't done your best for the bird. It is a kind act trying to help it. I really hope it survives & flies onto bigger and better things

Hissie, no need to apolgise, I know it wasn't meant that way. I wouldn't have seen it suffer. These people at least will know more about it and be able to help more than I could. It was a case of the best of 2 evils at the time. Jayjay, I have managed to release quite a few birds Sooty has let in. I can get up to 3 mice a day in ( dead or alive) after he has played a while he takes his eye off them and they disappear under the cooker etc.... I have 3 humane mouse traps and catch 99% of those ones and release them outside. Just once I let one out of the front door towards the left hedge, he changed his mind and ran to the right hedge ( sootys short cut from back to front ) 15 mins later in comes Sooty with said mouse and let it go under the cooker again.!

You'd think with all that training in mazes a mouse could do better than that

If a fledgling is found, or brought home alive by a cat, the best thing to do is put it gently and safely under a thick bush or hedge. If it's found at night, bring it indoors and leave it in a box somewhere warm and quiet, put something soft in the box, like an old towel. As soon as possible after daylight, put it outside under the bush or hedge. The parents, normally the male, will come looking for it, fledgling and parent will call each other. Keep a watchful eye from a distance and do your best to keep cats away, make sure they have bells on their collars. It's not possible to hand rear abandoned baby birds sadly, I've tried and failed. The RSPCB or any other charity aren't interested in wild birds unless they're a protected species. It's a horrible situation to be in and all that can be done is hope the parent comes back, fledglings only usually get 'ground' fed before they fly for about 3 to 5 days. Fortunately, it's an old wives tale that birds abandon their young if they've been handled by humans.
