Decisions Phone upgrade time, Remove any I-phone from the equation- I cannot deny their quality but I will not be told how I'm allowed to use a phone that I am purchasing > Choice is between a galaxy S3 and an htc one x Htc one has the better UI but suffers poorer battery life Galaxy s3 has better battery life but crap UI in comparison Anyone have experience of both of these handsets to share? Or should I just hang on and see what 4G has to offer because if I upgrade now it'll be 2 years before I can upgrade again Normally, after a little research I would know exactly what I wanted and go for it but I really can't make up my mind, a rare thing for me ??? Input please

You should try both and buy the one you like best and feels good. Don't worry too much about UI and stuff.
Then root it and put in a Cyanogen mod and customize it to your heart's content. That's the beauty of having an Android phone.

I've had an HTC Desire HD for about a year now. The battery life isn't great but it really depends on how you use it. I can manage 24 hours with one charge but I'm lucky if I make 2 or 3 calls a day. Also, I rarely switch on the Wi-Fi as this drains the battery quite quickly. I believe you can buy bigger batteries for them but expect to pay a few quid for it Other than that it's been a good phone and usually does as it's told i.e. I only have to re-boot it once every 2 weeks or so. My friend has a Galaxy S3 and from what I can gather the battery life isn't that much better, although he makes more calls than I do, perhaps 15 or 20 a day. He usually has to plug it into the car half way through the day.

Bye bye bloatware I'm erring towards the one x but its this 4G malarky that's really holding me

Isn't the 4G only with T-Mobile and Orange to start with?

I am pretty sure HTC One X is 4G compatible.. Also they are going to open bidding in early 2013, so it'll be almost two years before they properly roll it out.. In time for your next upgrade..

I am pretty sure HTC One X is 4G compatible.. I checked that yesterday Macca when I heard that EE (Orange- T mobile) got approval to start 4G and I don't think it is as it only says 3G in the specs. I am due for an upgrade from next month and was set on a One X but now I'm not so sure. With regards to the battery life on a Desire HD (I have one) you need to be careful what apps you have on it, I had a security app which kept polling the internet and it drained my battery 30 - 50% quicker. Removed and I'm back at a good days use with moderate internet/wi-fi and calling.

I dunno mate there is also HSDPA+ I am cofused! Wikipedia says the following "HSPA+ is an evolution of HSPA that upgrades the existing 3G network and provides a cheap way for telecom operators to migrate towards 4G speeds" confused.com

Yeah, looks like there are multiple technologies involved being called 4G. What would be important is what tech is going to be used over here. Also looks like there are two versions of the phone. One X and One XL which has LTE. The former is international and the latter is only for the USA which already has a 4G network. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HTC_One_XSomeone from the UK on XDA developers forum posted this: So I am confused..I'll just stick to my dual sim phone £100 phone cause I get free skype on 3Uk PAYG and it does what I want it to and my company pays for my voice calls from the other SIM within reason..

The UK OneX is an nVidia Tegra 3 quad core chip, and is unable to deal with LTE. The LTE models (XL) tend to have SnapDragon processors in them. I have the former. While you can root the device and use alternate ROMS, you are not able to gain S-OFF (for full control of the device), and getting that has been rather problematic. Personally, if I could swap, I would move over to the Samsung SIII which has none of these problems, and actually has a JellyBean ROM available for it now that works. I'm not best pleased with how HTC have 'limited' the One X, and this in turn has made me think twice about purchasing any HTC device in the future (even though my last 4 phones have been HTC). As an aside, I would be more than happy to get something WITHOUT 4G inside - I'd let the testers get it stable for the first couple of years and not pay the additional charges that are likely to be involved to boot. 3G (on Three) for me is plenty fast enough for now.

The question is is UK 4G going to be LTE tech? I do believe that it is. LTE means 'Long Term Evolution' and is a blanket term. The US has a different frequency to run 4G on (700Mhz I believe), so a phone in the UK wouldn't necessarily work in the US unless it had the appropriate coverage. There are a couple of articles on ' The Register' about 4G and LTE if you want further info. Edit: Added links
