My heating is most definitely on tonight! I need to dry some washing! I have 3 screens full of wet stuff and that's after drying towels etc in the tumble dryer

I've put mine on. The other night it smelled like it was going to snow. If you don't know what I mean you'll think I'm crazy, but at a certain temperature the air has a really cool and crisp smell to it that you only get when it's cold enough to snow. Colder than that and it has a different smell to it. When I went to work in the morning there was a fresh dusting on snow on the mountain. My nose tells no lies!

This site is worth a look, click on the country you live in. There are contact numbers and advisers can tell you about any heating/insulation grants etc available in your area. Some areas have council employed (so independent of fuel companies etc) advisers who can visit you at home to give tailored advice. Energy saving trust should be able to give you contacy numbers for this www.energysavingtrust.org.uk/

For those of you who feel the cold, I bought some of these heat tech tops last year. they really do help keep you warm and are great for layering up as they are nice and thin so you don't feel like the Michelin Man they also wash well and dry quickly! I have hunted them out from last year and am wearing one now shop.uniqlo.com/uk/goods/074066I'm sure they'd look very fetching on me. Reminds me, I need to stock up with M&S thermal underwear. Got two sets of long johns and a top, but one of the tops is showing its age. I used to wear them in rotation the entire winter out on the bike from dawn till dusk and beyond, so they proved themselves wonderfully. I can absolutely recommend these for practical winter wear - and these days it's better to wear an extra effective layer than spend outrageous amounts on oil.

Having been a senior manager at Corgi it still amazes me as to how much variance in price there is for a new heating system. Take my Mum for instant, she got local chap in who quoted her £4,500 for a new system, there wasn't much work needed doing, just replacing the old system with a new condensing one. I rang around a few friends who still live in Ipswich and hey presto, 3 weeks later she was handing over £1,400 for a new system with a remote thermostat. Last year in my house I had a Baxi back boiler, nothing wrong with it (except it being really inefficient) but I built a new extension so there wouldn't be any external vents in the room so it would be unsafe. So not only would I need a new boiler but I would also need to relocate it upstairs to the airing cupboard and I wanted to replace every single radiator in the house and add three new ones for the extension (old rads are very inefficient). All sounds pricey, well no, I got the whole lot, parts, labour the blooming lot for £3,100. Even though I have added a third to my house my used units are down by over 50% with the new boiler and rads. I know, if you haven't got the money then it doesn't matter how cheap it is, but the point being that there are a load of gas fitters who charge a huge amount for their labour and it's just not needed, make sure they are Gas Safe Registered and make sure you check their card and number and whoever you pick should be up to the job - Just ask around, ask friends for recommendations and do not take a first quote - oh, and as with everything HAGGLE

It's been on a bit, as we live in an old 2 up 2 down dairy cottage, when the weather turns it gets a bit naughty, best part though is I get to put the wood burner on :-)
