I do that! Minus the baking soda, just fabric softener and water. I have bicarb. in the cupboard though, (same thing) that's great for getting tea stains from cups. 2 tablespoons is a lot though, that would be almost the whole 200g pot!

I've just saved myself enough to purchase a lot of vaping kit over the next couple of years. 100g of Borax 100g of Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) 200g of cheap Daz handwashing powder 1 cake of soap - called for Sunlight, but none available, used Palmolive. Hot water in a bucket, melt the grated soap, add the powders, give a bloody good stir for five minutes and top ut to two gallons. Let set to a gel (takes a day) and use half a cup per wash instead of your normal washing powder. There's enough there to last me for ages and I'll never run out of soap powder or tablets again. I've done a couple of normal washes so far and it works well.

Well if we are talking about scrimping - one of my good mates' missus is a presenter on Chnl 4's Super Scrimpers, her blog has a load of stuff that can save you money and shows you how to make things like the stuff listed above: clairegay.blogspot.co.uk/Funniest thing though, her husband is the complete opposite, we have talked at great length in the pub about asking channel 4 to commission a Super Squanderers series that we and a few choice others we know appear on it (my missus being the host of the programme of course)
