To be honest Booblay I've briefly considered a genesis style atty then decided against, purely because getting the ss mesh and coil working together properly seems like a whole different level of faff to the silica wicks

Sounds like we all have slightly different methods - but in a sense that is the beauty of the RDA, so easy to try different approaches and see what you like. Personally I just use 3mm wick and I find that my ancient UKV group buy stuff gives the best results - I've tried various other wicks, including the GG stuff that works great in the Penelope, but I just don't find it works so well in the RDA. I am a bit mystified by the 20 drops to prime the wick - I just stick some juice in and vape away. 20 drops is the recommended maximum dosage as far as I was aware? Agree Dave, I use whatever wick I fancy using at the time, I have 1mm, 2mm and 3mm, sometimes I combine or use a few strands of one or another, i use .16 res wire, I drop some juice in and go, it is the beauty of the beast, it can be wicked to suit. I do use mesh when I fancy but there is no need I find, it works beautifully as it is.

Has anyone tried cotton wicks?

So the clockworks and penelope are the golden girls, obviously. But how does a Genesis style rebuildable compare? Since I'm so poor and vapour hut does a clone... Love the RDA but never liked the Ody that much, but love my Genesis atties also, once the mesh is prepared it last and lasts, just make another coil to go on it when needed. They all have their merits.

Would anyone be kind enough to take and post a nice close-up photo of a newly made coil for the RDA, the next time you make one? (Plus the details of the thickness of wick and wire you've used - and also the approximate thickness of whatever implement you used to hold the wick against while winding the coil; eg, paperclip, or whatever.) To be honest, I still thinking I'm winding them too tight, even though I'm trying not to. (Being a bit cack-handed obviously doesn't help!) But I think it would help me a lot if I could see close-up exactly how snugly the coil is supposed to be wrapped round the wick when it's done properly. (The written advice I've already been given is great, obviously, but some pictures would really help.)

I don't use a pin or paperclip to aid winding the wire around the wick, I hold the wick in one hand firmly and coil fairly firmly but not tight.
Will try and do as you ask if I get time later, it's to dark or I would do it now, my desk with all the bits are in my bedroom and hubby is still sleeping.

It's ok to do it now sandra, coil making that is AAEC need's you And i'm with you sandra, don't use an implement just wrap by hand, but i've only done a few, and am certainly not an expert.

This is just as I am starting using .16 wire and not using anything ie pin, paperclip just winding around the wick on its own. Done and loop cut off Best pic I could get sorry

Lol@Blue Just to add, when we put the tails through the holes in the RDA I pull gently, not over pull but enough so it sits snug, and use my finger nails to tidy up the coil if needed but to be honest the RDA is very forgiving and unless you want it perfect it usually doesn't matter. Here is a good video from Todd on the RDA ukvapers.org/Thread-Review-Clockworks-RDA

Thanks, Sandra --- What thickness of wick is that you're using?

Think that is about 2mm wick.

SUCCESS! Just made a coil exactly like yours, Sandra, with some 2mm wick that just arrived in the post. It's working a treat. I have to say, it's certainly a lot less fiddly to wrap the coil round a doubled over length of wick, rather than trying to hold the wick against a paperclip and wrap around that. It's also easier to tell how tight you're getting it. I think the paperclip method was throwing me off, and making me wrap too tight. Over the last few days, all of my attempted coils have just led to that dreaded burnt taste. Such a relief to find a method I can use that works! Also, I suspect it helps to have some brand new wick. I have to say, the stuff I've been using was a bit worn and tatty-looking. That can't help the flavour of the vape can it?
