..and would like some advice. I really like the idea of an 'all in one'. I've seen this one: Sony VAIO JS Series All-In-One PC - VGC-JS4EF/S - 4 GB RAM - 2.8 GHz - 500 GB HDD The only thing I know about computers is how to turn one on and send an email. Any advice would be gratefully received.

Lynda, the only PC's I'd recommend to anyone are Medion bought via Aldi specials. They are not only a good price with fantastic specs, but you also get a free 3 year no quibble warranty with them - & that's worth a fortune IMHO.
If you can hang on a while, I'm fairly certain the next Aldi PC/laptop specials will be in about a month to 6 weeks time.

What would you want to be doing with your new PC, Lynda? Besides coming here and emails? That model has been out for nearly a year and a quick Google has not found it currently on sale for me ??? You do pay a premium for Sony Vaio branding, I beieve. (L gone missing again ) The all-in-ones look really neat, though Just some thoughts, research needed scylla x

i was going to say exactly the same as chrissie, ive not had one of theres for about 4 years but the service was great, you must make sure it has the 3 years warranty. as scylla says do you really need high spec. most of the dear stuff is for graphics, speed, extra plugins and loads more stuff you will never use. what you need is a fairly basic spec with at least 4 gig memory and a 1 year old processor (the new ones are brilliant but you will never know the difference just for web use and collect a few photos or music and films. the aldi ones are probably a little over speced for your needs and there not quite the value they were unless you are going to use the extras. raggy.

I can fully recommend Sony VAIO computers. I've had mine for about 9 years now & it's never caused me a problem. Expensive but worth it.

This is the one I was looking at but I don't know anything about the company....Aria are a very well established company, I've known them for getting on 10 years, so there are no probs about the supplier being a fly-by-night (tho' nothing is certain these days). The Vaio is running Windows7 64-bit, so if you have peripherals (eg printer) you must ensure you can get the appropriate drivers for them; and if you have programs/apps that you would want to install on the Vaio they need to be 64-bit capable. (I don't fully know what I'm talking about there but I do know it should be investigated.) The Aldi is 32-bit Windows7 - I haven't had problems finding drivers for anything except my 10-year-old Nikon camera, had to get a new one of lesser quality. So it's a question of weighing up this 'n that I'm trying to think where you could go for knowledgable advice that won't blind you with techie-science - these techie types are so fond of using jargon, which I find unintelligible. Both those PCs are very super-duper and if I had a desk that wasn't being used by Bro for model-train-making I'd be jealous scylla

Here's a review of the Samsung U200 in ComputerActive (UK): www.computeractive.co.uk/ca/review/1916839/samsung-u200Do you really want to pay for a touch-screen? I've never looked at these all-in-ones before, maybe they all have it. Also I'd be worried about the ease/not of replacing hardware - like if the HDD borked. Do you definitely want a desktop rather than a laptop? There are lappies out there which would be powerful enough for you for <£500. Those are just thoughts. It's going to take a bit of studying. I 100% agree with Raggy about AVF, am an avid member. scylla

I've nothing really constructive to offer you Lynda, as I'm a complete duffer at this technical malarkey . . . although I must completely agree with Scylla on the desk top v laptop.
When my desk top goes phut I won't bother replacing it as 99% of my computer time is spent on the lappy . . . the 1% on the desk top is only spent because the printer/scanner are attached to it . . . which I could easily do from the laptop as well.

Same as Perpy, I love my laptop & very seldom use my desk top.
