Some of the newer USB external drives are a reasonable price - I picked up a 1TB drive which doesn't need an external power source, just USB, for about £60. Loads of space there! Vista is a nightmare, see if you can afford an upgrade to Windows 8, should be about £70, and will work like a dream compared to Vista! Best of luck!

I use a vacum cleaner to clean out the dust. Ooooo dinnae do that! Household vacuum cleaners generate a lot of static electricity that can severely bugga your computers delicate innards. Service techs use shielded ones but they're pricy. Some good tips on cleaning here if you're interested: www.computerhope.com/cleaning.htmCheers, John

I'd use a plastic head on that vacuum cleaner.
Brian, I also did my time in IT & pc repair, but I wouldn't try to take a laptop apart just to clean it.
BTW blue, have you checked that your startup folder doesn't contain anything you don't need?

I have worked in IT for ... Heh, same here. But I'd never recommend folks getting stuck in and about thier pc with a household vac. ESD damage is often latent and may only manifest later in unexplained hangs or reboots for example, so why risk the hassle? Better to use compressed air or a safe handheld vac IMO. Cheers, John

giles yeah i've unticked all uneccesary startup programmes, but that is by the by, it now starts up perfectly, problem is i seem to have another problem and that is, when i open a website ie, aaec no problem it loads quick and all is well, but say i then click on any other link ie, computer and internet help it takes a while for it to load and i get the spinney disc sign, and it will take sometimes up to a minute to load that page, the funny thing is once the tab has been open for about 15 mins or so and i have been going to differant pages, it will go from page to page as it should, it's like it needs to warm up befor working correctly ??? Ps, i used a plastic nozzle on the vacuum and Pss, giles you say, have you checked that your startup folder doesn't contain anything you don't need? what is the minimum you need to have on startup? can you uncheck all the startup boxes? as i say though, it starts up fine now so is not really a problem , just asking, cheers all.

Dont want to make the old thing a cripple Exactly that brian, although some are put together differently, our old lappy, the bottom comes completely off just by undoing all the screws, easy peasy, however, step daughters lappy Packard bell is sort of moulded onto the keyboard, or the keyboard and all the gubbins sit inside it, suffice it to say i was unable to take the whole back off that one (insufficient knowledge) but could take a main panel off to access the hard drive etc so all in all, suck it and see bri, as long as you don't try and force anything you should be ok

ROFL Collywobbles
Well Blue, one of my laptops has nothing at all in the startup folder; the other has stuff in it that I could probably get rid of, but it runs faster than Brian's fast thing, so I haven't bothered.
If you tell us what's in it we can advise.
However, I should warn you at this point that making your machine run faster is kind of like getting a better vaping experience in that lots of people here will give you lots of advice, and support you all the way.
So you might want to quit while you are ahead.
Otherwise you might as well tell us what you do for anti-virus and internet browser.

As giles warned, here comes the sales pitch...
I'd get a back up external USB hard drive, if you shop around you should be able to get either a 1 or 2TB for around £60 if not less (it's been around 3 months since I bought one). Copy pretty much everything over to that (or if you've got back up software let it take the strain).
Every 6-9-12 months or so, or just when I've had enough of my PC(s) being slow I just delete & reformat the hard drive and install a new operating system over the top of it. That way I can get a pretty fast PC even if it's 4 or 5 years old.
My trick is I have an external hard drive that I save all of my docs / emails / "my documents" / iTunes blah blah blah.. (which is also backed up). Then if anything goes wrong I just start a fresh knowing everything is safe, and relatively easy to re-instate.

After you reformat the hard drive and install the operating system, you install your user software, don't you Firin? From the CDs, which you bought, and kept?
