After you reformat the hard drive and install the operating system, you install your user software, don't you Firin? From the CDs, which you bought, and kept? I keep all my software install packages on an external hard drive too, saves having to find thousands of different disks every time I do it. Blue, the specs don't sound like you should be struggling to start up in the morning, I've not used super anti spyware so couldn't comment on it, I have spybot which is another free one which works well for me.

Yep, Firin, you're one of the organised ones. Those of us who have failed to do that and have lost the CDs that were rip-off copies in the first place find it more difficult :-[
Blue - don't say I didn't warn you.
I don't know super anti spyware either, but the reviews are pretty bad. One says 'The antispyware tool routinely leaves traces of infections, and according to some online reports, it left some malware running after it had supposedly removed it.' which could just possibly explain your problems. It might be worth uninstalling it and loading another - I don't know Firin's spybot - I use Avast. In the past I've used AVG which is also good. Both free. Other people will have other favourites.
If you are using Internet Explorer and are having trouble loading a second tab, it might be worth installing another browser. IE is the E-lites of the computer world these days. Chrome is pretty quick. Again, other people will recommend other stuff. Don't try to uninstall Internet Explorer. You can happily run both at once.

Yup I agree, Avast is one of the better ones (IMO better than some of the ones you have to pay for). I did try AVG but now stick with Avast. I have Chrome, Firefox and IE on my PC and use them all (well maybe not IE if I have to). Giles I'm only organised because I've had to be, I've been the guy phoning round friends asking for a loan of their install disks. BTW Rip off copies can always be re-ripped off

My main PC is always on, so we have one less polar bear down to me.
Don't worry about renewing the Avast licence, I've never had any problems with it.

So much of this chat has gone straight over my head Ive an old Packard Bell Lappy. So many times it just freezes on me. What do you techy guys reckon is the best thing i can use to give it a good clean, for free? I do disc cleanup and defrag on a regular basis, but still runs so slow. Especially if I go on a thread where theres any youtube videos posted.

My advice, although Im late to the party here, would have been to try a selective startup first to see if it was just installed apps loading on windows loadup slowing you down... For future reference you do this by going to the start menu>all programs>accessories>Run Then in the run dialog box that opens type in msconfig When the msconfig app opens, under the first tab "general" select the bottom option, "selective startup" keep the 3 tick boxes underneath that ticked.... then click on the 4th tab "startup" and deselect all those programs (these are all the programs that are loading with windows) NOTE: if you are using a laptop, some of these will need to remain ticked, you should be able to recognize the ones needed, they will be things like track pad... Press OK... you will be prompted to restart, do it... Now when you restart you will be able to tell if it loads up much quicker or not. If it does, and you have no problems you can keep it on selective startup if you like (I do naughty) on boot a dialog box will open, can't remember exactly what it says, but basically it asks if you want to keep selective startup, and there is also an option to not show that message again. Now if when it loads up you realise something hasn't loaded that should have, just go back into msconfig and select the programs that needs to run on boot, make it run on boot and restart.... Fast startups forever...

Did someone say VISTA???, got the shivers brrrrrrrrrrr. It is no surprise to me that there was never a Vista2 . It is the absolute bitch of operating systems. Ccleaner is an excellent free clean up utilty with a registry cleaner and a junk files cleaner. I just installed and ran it on my nieces lappy and it found five and a half gigs of crap!!! There is also a startup cleaner so you can turn off unnecessary programs that start up with Vista brrrrr, did it agin . It is surprising what stuff you can have there that you know nothing about. Worth a shot, and it`s free. I would think you definitely need a defrag as well, again that can make an incredible difference!!

Thumbs up on the defrag, it's amazing the difference a defrag can make, coupled with good maintenance like managing your startup, temp files, disk cleanup, registry etc... all can be maintained by options already built into windows, no need for any extra apps, other than anti virus
