Hi,
I had some doubts regarding oxidising SS mesh wick and also the coil.
Is it necessry that we use a blow torch to get that high temperature or would a lighter do the trick. (Would get a nice chance to reuse all my Zippo's)

Anything like that would work, it just depends how fast you want it done tbh, wouldnt use a cheapo plastic lighter for any length of time though, they have a tendancy to melt and seize the flint wheel, also thay get very hot. But best bet is either a cooks blowtorch or the plumbers blowtorch can be picked up fairly cheaply from ebay or hardware store.

I've struggled with hotspots all weekend, and have put it down to my impatience with oxidising with a lighter, as I don't think I've been doing it fully. After another failed attempt this morning I went into town and picked up a chef's torch from Robert Dyas for £13, refillable with lighter butane cans. www.robertdyas.co.uk/P~153199~Kitchen-Craft-Cooks-Blow-TorchI could have got it cheaper online, but I wanted it NOW. So much quicker than a lighter, it's made a chore a lot more pleasurable, and coupled with this advice on rolling wicks ukvapers.org/Thread-How-to-roll-super-tight-wicks-read-this?highlight=Wick , which I was also struggling with making small enough, my wicks are now delightful. However, even after using the blowtorch I'm still getting hotspots, but on the positive side my crème brûlées have come out beautifully.

I use a chefs torch much quicker then lighter and you get a more intense heat i hold the end of the wick with a pair of tweezers tried holding it once the end of the wick with my fingers wont be doing that again got a nasty burn.

I would think anyone taking it upon themselves to do this, and to have some pre-rolled ready for direct insertion to various items would probable make a pretty penny - a lot of work involved though for maybe not a lot in return. although I have a feeling one may have to roll first before oxidising Would be nice to buy off the shelf, it would certainly help in converting a lot of Nova's, and would get a few more people into buying rebuilables
