After getting slower and slower last week my laptop finally became unuseable so after trying loads of things I decided to wipe the hardrive and reinstall Windows Vista. Everything was going fine, I even got myself back online within the first hour, then the updates started. Seriously, how broken is Vista? Four whole days and nights downloading and installing updates, even Windows Update updated twice. And don't get me started on that damn Service Pack 1 constantly failing and messing up the other updates.
I am at a loss on how a software programme can take minutes to install and then spend 96 hours fixing itself. ???

It's Windows ME all over again, only a corporation like Microsoft can carry enough clout to get away with charging people for a seriously flawed OS, I hated vista with a passion, loved xp and still have the black edition on one of my pc's, but now they have stopped xp support, I dual boot my mac into windows 7 if I need it, not a fan of vm to be honest.

XP support doesn't end till 2014, so a few years yet, but Vista, what a horrible waste of time and money that was, worse than ME, a total shambles and a complete disaster, 7 is worth it if you can upgrade to it, and especially if you can feed it a minimum of 8Gb ram, it is passable. I saw an old Sony Vaio a 1Ghz duron and 2Gbs of Ram with Win 8 it was usable - so something to think about? Best of luck with it anyway! Thing to do, if you do get it up and running, is get a backup drive or make a drive image of it, so if it does go belly up, you can restore to how it is once you've got it working, saves a huge amount of time and effort.

As Timnowvapes says its ME all over again, win 7 is far better its basically what vista should have been. With the SP's I always download the full install of them and install from there rather than letting windows do it for me. They nearly always then seem to install first time.

tip for failed windows update fail: use CCleaner run also the reg cleaner, you basic need to delete whats in the temp folder in windows[its where the downloads for the updates go] and then re try updates,i will agree its a pain, had to do that on W7 last month to get all updates installed,oh and look carefully if one says Graphic card software update if you have already updated that to newest the Windows Update is an old version lol so uncheck it

When they are installed the Windows Installer then creates a temporary folder on the logical drive with the most free space during the actual installation process. This folder then of course is deleted after installation. To fix update issues you can try stopping the windows update service using net stop WuAuServ deleting the %windir%\SoftwareDistribution\Download restart the download service net start WuAuServ Meeee

I also hate Vista with a passion . . . bought my laptop at just the wrong time with it on, it's driven me mad for 4+years, quite frankly. XP is far more user friendly . . .

Made the same mistake Perps Hate it > Have XP on the PC and it's so much better. Just started using Windows 7 at work....seems quite good.
