I am also finding mesh very temperamental lately :'(I am mainly struggling with the dreaded top coil hotspot and can't seem to shake it off no matter how i adjust my setup.Would you be kind enough to add a photo Dave as i really want to give a silica wick a go and would love to see your setup if it is working well.I have heard so many people say its crap using a silica wick which has always put me off trying one. IMO there’s nothing wrong with using a silica wick setup if that’s what you like, infact some flavours suit my palate better using a silica wick, but it seems a shame to have a genesis atty & fit a silica wick only because it’s a bit of a fiddle to eliminate hot spots, it can be very frustrating I know but it’s worth persevering.

Here you go Ian. It is beginning to look a bit manky, but still vaping well: Attachments:

Nice one Dave, thanks alot for that.Im going to have a go with some 3mm wick now as wicking with silica wick is child's play and second nature.I have now got the Aga-S working great without hotspots but the Chinese DID clone is playing up terrible.Macca,i am aware of all that but i have heard people say that the Aga-S is not so good when using silica wick.I used to have trouble with Clockworks RTA when using silica wick as with chain vaping it just never wicked quickly enough for me.There must be better wire to use to kill off these hotspots altogether?Sure i heard of someone a while ago now who used silver heating wire which stopped all hot spotting problems.Surely someone will come up with a better idea to set these genesis atomisers up easily eventually??

Hotspots are very easy to get rid of..Takes literally seconds..Understanding the reason for the hotspot is what is important. Essentially you are trying get all the current to run through the coil and not go anywhere else. Current will always run through the path of least resistance.
Hifi had some luck eliminating hotspots by using some plastic wrap around the wick where it enters the tank insulating the wick from the top piece/diaphragm. This will eliminate some issues providing the wick is not bottoming out but will not prevent hotspots caused by coil wire cutting into the wick.
Another way is to use a silica sock but for me it brought a reduction in flavour and throat hit. People are trying out capillary tubes over the mesh, but Ghoti on UKV who has been trying various configurations said that the flavour wasn't great from those either in addition to the popping and reduced vapour.
A porous ceramic rod might be the solution, but some have tried this and said the pores block up pretty quick and it is also expensive. I am trying to get some samples to try this out for myself.

Thanks alot Macca, some great info and advice there.I will be the first to admit that me and mesh have never really got on :(I can get all of my coils to glow evenly and then as soon as i add juice to the tank and wick the top hotspot always comes back.I have the Aga-S performing perfectly for now with great flavour and big vapour but the question is for how long :)I will keep trying as I love the performance when it's all working how it should.I will never give up and just hope the perfect solution for everyone struggling, like i am,is eventually discovered. It is simply a top coil issue every time for me.Very sorry that i have gone sort of off topic here folks.

I have only this evening had a chance to sit down and have a look at my AGA-S and I'm one of the lucky ones as the hole lines up with the wick hole I too have had a lot of problems using SS wicks in the T so I thought i'd try a silica wick with this one and I'm glad to say the results have been good! (not great but i'll come to that in a bit). I used 3mm wick and 0.2 kanthal. I folded over the top end of the wick by about 5mm like a "P" but the top flattened against itself, the tail is long enough to reach into the bottom of the tank. I did 3 wraps of wire around the loop and pushed the tail into the tank. I then trimmed it up and checked the resistance - 1.6 ohms, great! Here's a couple of pictures:- I thought it may have a problem wicking and I'd get dry hits, but no, it is going well. However it does seem to be a bit diminished in taste, but a good amount of vapor, better for me than the SS wick and a lot easier.

Might be worth trying 0.2 Nichrome Des - you can get the same resistance with an extra wrap of wire Works well for me.

Don't know what to do with my new Aga-s now. Fiberglass option looks a bit hairy & I'm worried about inhaling any of that, although probably been doing so already with cartos etc. The ss mesh option seems more safe healthwise but almost impossible to achieve ???

Think I'll be positive & try the ss mesh, themeshcompany.com have got a 10% christmas discount on. If you use enough of it there's also 15% on top for orders over £50, but I'm not that positive lol.

Set mine up and vapes nice.. Like the clever chap I am, I thought the airhole did not line up and was 180 degrees out. Filed and sanded the top cap down only to notice later that the hole with the bung is for the mesh wick and the hole that is left open is for the silica wick is near the taller post and the air hole lined up perfectly to start with So after swapping the terminals around here are some pics: 4 wraps Kanthal 0.2, 1.6 ohm, 30mm x 2mm dia wick. 3.4 volts. Only just got round to setting mine up, actually forgot I had it . . . . & oops did exactly the same thing as Macca At least I'm in illustrious company I can say it's a very nice vape & worth the extra bit of self inflicted effort, it looks the business as well sat on a shiney chrome spinner, just the right size & brought the spinner back into use.
