Well don't be looking for correct grammar from me Skwoddy I fail at that I am also an over user of the smiley the smiley I think I may need smiley rehab hahaha Please don't think I'm a grammar nazi. I'm quite lazy myself a lot of the time, but I do think that many subjects or comments are taken out of context because of an ill placed or forgotten comma. I do get a little annoyed though at complete paragraphs without a single use of any grammar, it's just a struggle to make sense of fifty plus words strung together, for me anyway.

I use to signify either tongue in cheek comment or as pixi says to signify cheeky. There isn't a tongue in cheek smiley. I use ....... to signify a pause. It is very difficult at times to articulate the context in which you mean what you are saying so the only way you can make sure no one gets offended or takes what you are saying in the wrong way is to use emoticons. When you are talking to someone in real life of course you wouldnt do emoticon faces as you can tell by a persons facial expression what they mean. You can't here. Also, some people find it hard to pick up on another persons sense of humour. To be honest, if all i had to get wound up about was smileys i would be very very grateful.

Yes, but a smile conveys the right tone in such instances..
Not a wink which makes the person look facetious..

Well, I guess it is all a matter of interpretation isn't it? You perceive it one way and others differently. I really don't think anyone does any emoticon to cause offence...do they? Or am i just naive?

Facetious? A wink icon? Really?
I've used it often here, and probably will do again. I use it to interpret something "cheeky" I might have said, and it's not really meant, just a joke, so as not to cause offense.
Personally I think there's many things to get het over on a forum (not particular just here) and that's not really one of them in my opinion.

Ohhh, I think I may be very guilty of this and also the blow kiss smiley , I do quite like them and I don't mean to offend. Often I use them because I am being friendly, I don't offer much advice as I don't have much advice to give and there < I may have added a wink face smiley as it would acknowledge my ineptness with all things e cig

Yes it is obviously a matter of interpretation and opinion..That's what a forum is.. A collection of opinions..
Funny how one person says it is irksome and the immediate reaction of almost every one else is to make sure they include it in their posts..Gives some real insight into human behavior..

I think it means they are trying to have a sense of humour about it and not getting too hung up about it

In all fairness Macca I used to go nuts with people doing...................................................this but you get to the point where you think what's the point in winding yourself up about it. Yes violet...............another member seemed to take offence at my usage of the 'dot'......but it's my thing & I like it....... maybe for 2013, said person will get a sense of humour.

Misinterpretation of the written word can be the absolute bane of forums such as this. I imagine most people use smileys to try and lessen the risk that what they've said might be taken the wrong way. I use the wink smiley sometimes to make sure that what I've just said is seen as either joking or cheeky and absolutely not to be taken seriously. However, I do agree that it is misused at times and can make a comment look sarcastic rather than jokey - even if that's not the intention. Love 'em or not, I think they're more help than hindrance - mostly

Actually I half agree with macca here. Not about their usage in general posts as I do think they convey sarcasm / cheek / not to be taken seriously, where as a to me more conveys friendship/pleasure/happy to help BUT if someone opened a thread saying they hated swearing for instance and everyone used swear words in their reply to make it funny, it'd be seen as rude and antagonistic. I think (and it's only my understanding through reading this so I may be well off the mark) macca is only saying they shouldn't be used in this thread, and should be used a lot more sparingly in others instead of as often as they are. Apologies if I misunderstand, macca.

Not at all..People can do what they like same as I won't stop letting people know what I think is completely silly and appears facetious in many circumstances.
It's just not something you would do as often, when interacting with others..
You would laugh, smile, express displeasure or disapproval, agree, appear angry, appear sad, stick your tongue out, but very very rarely would you wink.
So I have no idea why statements like:
"I have been using it for 6 months" or " You should install this software and try." or " I took the dogs out to a walk" should either be offensive or warrant a wink.. Just visualize someone winking when they said that you..
