Have you checked the atomiser head is screwed down, if it is a re-buildable one.
Edit - just checked the kit out online and not a rebuildable one, also now seen your post it is sorted, so ignore what I wrote.

Karma it was the centre pin on the battery not connecting. I'm all new to this so learning all the time. Thank you so much to everyone for the help. What a great forum.

Gracie, what turned out to be the problem then? I guess we'll find out. I have never had a dud clearo, but I can safely say more often than not CE4s and 5s will NOT work on my batteries first time on. "It's 'coz I've been using 510 stuff innitt!" Put on a brand new CE5 this morning (from Vape Escape) on my Spinner. No joy. Turned the battery off (5 clicks), lifted up the centre pin, sorted.

Hi Gracie and all responders,
This is rather wierd as I bought a second kit identical to Gracie at about the same time and from VE and have the same problem. Initially got the new clearomiser to work but now getting nowhere - no amount of raising battery contact is working on any of the 4 I have from the 2 kits or from other 510 batteries. Not overly concerned as I spoke to Ellen at VE and will be returning the clearo for replacement. Suppose what Iwant to know is whether this is a design issue cos I seem to have to play around with the batteries for my fully working clearo even though I try really hard not to tighten them too far when charging. Any comments/suggestions/advice would be appreciated.

Me again,
just spent another 15 mins or so fiddling with batteries whilst pretending not to hear oh asking if i was going to put the damn thing down and come to bed!!!
Think i have sussed whats causing the problem but cant solve it. on the inside of the clearo there are 2 concentric circular bits and it looks like the outer one is pushing the battery down and preventing the inner circle from making contact. no amount of adjustment to battery contact seems to work and i,ve now stopped as i,m wprried i will pull the contact out of the battery

Exactly the same as I had rno7552. Hope you get it sorted. I just quickly tried mine the once by raising the battery, seemed to work then, hope they continue working.

Dead on Arrival clearos & cartos do happen, thankfully not often. As you've found, battery centre pins can get stuck down. Also, the inside concentric ring inside the clearo base should be spring-loaded, and sometimes the spring doesn't push the contact down far enough or it gets a bit sticky, and needs gently easing with a pair of tweezers to allow it to fully spring back down, thus ensuring contact with the battery post it's a PITA when things go wrong, but not always catastrophic

Thanks for your reply Gunjack. Have tried to move the inner ring on Clearo base but it feels solid not spring based. Ah well, time to look for a jiffy bag and send it back to VE - at least I got to speak to Ellen when I rang them earlier in the week!!!

The 510 connection isn't the best design in the world. Nothing wrong with the outer screw connection, but the centre pin is a finger connector - they terminals just push against each other, much like a +ve battery connection. This would be fine if one of the posts was sprung (ie like a -ve battery connection), but they aren't. Both the battery and atty centre pins are fitted with a rubber (or silicon) grommet which primary purpose is to insulate against the outer connection. There is little tolerance in the rubber for either centre pin being too long / short. If either is too long, one of the grommets becomes stressed and can fail - either immediately or over time. Hence we all get to learn not too tighten anything up too tight, and the use of a pair of tweezers to temporarily fix the problem. Anyway, enough waffle over electrical connections. Edit See my post with pictures here if interested - www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/general-e-smoking-discussion/362541-fixing-broken-510-connector-guide-pics.html
