Got my second carbon monoxide test done today it's now the levels of a non smoker! Woo. Last Friday after 2 days of no analogues I had the readings of a passive smoker. So I'm happy I'm having a spirometery test done on monday and in 6 months I'll check it again to see if vaping is causing any damage to my lungs. I'm sort of doing a small clinical trial on myself

Good for you. Yeh, you shouldn't have any carbon monoxide in your system. I look forward to hearing about your test results and in 6 months. Well done.

That's my plan captain. I'm under the impression that there has been no proper clinical trials done in to vaping. I still feel its more healthy than smoking so even if its a bad result ill still keep vaping.

Clinical trials are carried out by pharmaceutical companies and I doubt very much if they would record result that were favourable for us unless they were producing and selling e-juice. One of the main reasons why I vape is the cost compared to other nicotine enhanced products and if Pharma get their sticky paws on our e-juice, you can guarantee that price will go through the roof. I just noticed this morning that the price of the fags I used to smoke are now £7.02p a packet and I used to smoke 40+ a day.

I do and I don't want clinical trials done lobey it's weird I have this desire to know what I'm doing is safe although I know already it's alot safer than smoking. I know that regulation of juice will increase the price and probably lower the quality of a few small batch makers juices. I wonder that if the EU were to just set a lowest standard for juice if that would work?

I know that regulation of juice will increase the price and probably lower the quality of a few small batch makers juices. I wonder that if the EU were to just set a lowest standard for juice if that would work? The EU are proposing a 4mg limit on e-juice. That is the equivalent of one Nicorette piece of NRT chewing gum. However, that same company advises that a 20+ a day smoker should chew no more than 24 pieces of 4mg gum in any one day. That is 96mg in a day!!!!! If they consider that it will take 96mg of NRT gum to satisfy a 20+ a day cigarette smoker, why are they pushing for e-juice to have a max strength of just 4mg. I think the answer is obvious. Get e-juice banned and push Nicorette and put more money in their pockets. So Pixieguru, No, I don't want to see Big Pharma or any other type of business interfering with anything to do with Vaping. The chemicals used in e-juices are all under rigorous control and the only part that, at the moment is not under control is that of the mixing of these chemicals to make e-juices, which is why, if I am buying any e-juice, I only buy from recognised Vaping Vendors.

Speaking as a Drugs Rep here,Clinical Trials come in many stages before ANY Pharmaceutical molecule get close to Liscensing. They cost an absoloute forune. They are done to determine the effective dose range,Tolerability and Toxicity, possible interaction between other molecules.I cant see that ANY Pharma Company at present will be delving into Vaping.Let me explain further.
one day in a Swamp far away from UK,a Chemical Biologist hears of the Umbagumba Tribe using a certain green Slime from a certain swamp to treat, lets say..............Bowel Cancer. The slime is collected as ANY cancer Med WILL make a lot of money............IF it works. So back in the UK they splice and isolate the molecule that is identified to be the Cancer affecting one.So a year later,Ripemoff Pharma manage to synthesise enough of the molecule to start trials on.So they inject, wipe, smear the stuff on poor animals to see what happens,so we find out that it kills snakes dead, but no effect on Rats, dogs or Mice.So its shows promise.By this stage most molecules get binned as threy are too toxic,or too expensive to synthesise. So now they recruit some lucky Students eager for a few £££££££'s and dose them with Placebos and the Molecule and see what happens.Eventually,IF it doesnt kill the trialists or give them liver failure, they look at the effective dose.Assuming all goes well they apply for a Liscence. They may get it without further testing or may not depending on the MRHA decision. The next hurdle is getting NICE to recommend it.The OVERIDING thing that matters to the Pharma Company is.....................CAN WE MAKE A HUGE PROFIT FROM THIS?The new drtug not only has to perform better than whats already out there, but its got to be cost effective AND a DIRECT BENFIT TO THE PATIENT.So for Vaping and Juices to become a target for Pharma companies, they will have to show a DIRECT Health Benefit from them.So just ask yourself,do you get a DIRECT benefit from Vaping.the answer is...............NO!You get a DIRECT benfit from stopping your intake of Tobacco Smoke, not the vaping.THAT is the crux of the matter,Vaping CANT make you better. What makes you better is stopping smoking. So untill they CAN PROVE a DIRECT HEALTH benfit of Vaping and E Juices, its not going to happen. An analagy is stop drinking Alcohol and start drinking bottled water, its not the Water that makes you healthier, its the removal of Alcohol from the equation. What we DO need is to INFORM the powers that be more about Vaping as a "Harm Reduction Method"not just as a replacement for smoking.

Evidence about vaping doesn't have to come from drug licensing style clinical trials though. Studies like randomised trials could be done by any qualified people with the resources time and inclination to do so and would be useful. The work done by Konstantinos Farsalinas, on the effects of vaping on the heart is good science, done on his own time. He has access to the expensive equipment due to his work, so thats a fortunate situation. If awareness of vaping is increased then more scientists may wish to look at it.
I would like to see proper evidence on the effects of vaping. I think its important. Obviously not biased studies. But quality science that helps us understand the effects of vaping is surely better than ignorance.

Unfortunately 'quality science' is very hard to come by when most studies are financed by people that want to see a specific outcome useful to them It's all down to money >
