My Acer lap top is 2 years old, I never knowlingly let the battery run too low down. However, this morning, i had the prompt to plug it in or it would go into hibernation, as it was plugged in I ignored it and carried on, then it switched off! How do I find out what the problem is? The battery dead, the wall socket plug dead, the adaptor is dead? Nothing is dead just plug it in somewhere else and leave it for until it springs back to life?

This is a safety mechanism to stop the battery completely dying. Plug it in and it will be fine once the battery gets some charge in it.
Edit - sorry, just realised you said it was already plugged in. Does it have a charging light to show that power is getting to it from the charger?

Take the battery out and then plug it in. The laptop will work without a battery aslong as the Power is plugged in.
If there is a fault with the cable/plug then this will prove that. re battery fault not sure how you can tell.

I have plugged it in to another wall socket but no lights are on to show it is charging, so I assume it is either the battery or adaptor.

Cannot find how to get the battery out, it appears to be in a unit on it's own not one to be removed by screws? There is a pic on it with a big cross thru it,as in do not remove?

I think its more of a power lead fault rather than the battery or laptop.
Does your power lead have a power box with a lead going into it from the wall plug and then a lead out of the box you plug into the laptop?
If so you could try to unplug the side where the Wall plug is and see if you can find something with the same connection to plug into it and try that. Maybe a dvd player or games console.

Checked the wall plug, nothing wrong with that my radio works fine when plugged it. One thing eliminated. The cross on the battery cover is obviously how not too dispose of it, but still cannot find how to remove the battery. Plugged in back into original socket and now have my orange light ...battery charging. No idea whats gone on with it me being impatient I should think. ))

It sounds like a connection had come loose and by unplugging it all and moving it about you've sorted it. Panic over

Another common fault with lappies is the solder joint on the centre pin going into the laptop getting dry due to the amount of current going through it and people using them on a soft surface like a cushion or on the bed or whatever. I have fixed about 10 of them in the last couple of years. It`s a pain lol, it normally involves a total strip down just about, but a quick fix once you get there. You can normally find it easy enough though by wiggling the lead going into the laptop a bit.

Thanks robby, I read your reply and thought anything is worth a try, I took the pin lead out and blew down it then replaced it, plugged it in and hey ho I have a battery charging light come on, it has been on now for 1 hr so I will leave it until later then boot up and see what happens. Fingers crossed it will work. I had intended taking it down to the PC repair shop down the road from me, tomorrow but was not looking forward to the cost as they are never cheap.

where the wire comes from charger to lappy theres a rubber grommet, has that split? if so same happened to other halfs acer lappy, the earth in cable has broke at that point,so check there sometimes it was charging fine then wouldnt ,ok i cheated and resoldered a joint and tapped it back up a point worth mentioning is other half when finished used to coil lead up round charger this caused it to split
