Hi, I was wondering if anyone has tried heat shrink tubing where the stainless steel wick goes through the body of a DID or similar atty, and also maybe a small piece at the bottom of the wick to stop it making contact with the metal base of the atty. Does it strangle the wick? Thanks in anticipation.

Yes it will but you can get away with the bottom piece , some people use ptf tape on the middle of the wick, never tried it myself though

Cutting off the end of the wick at 45 degrees will reduce the contact to a pin point, better yet, if you have a clear tank you can suspend the mesh above the bottom cap so there is no contact, but a well oxidised mesh prevents most shorts.

Yes, the main trouble I am getting is hot spots at the top of the coil, I`ve oxidised till I am blue in the face lol. I saw a post on another forum where they used airstone from a fish tank as a wick, it worked soso, not enough sucking up the liquid, but a clever idea, really thinking outside the box

I use insulating bushings on the wick hole, either the ones that come for the center pin or ones I've bought. The tighter they are around the wick the more they'll restrict but not to the point of stopping the wicking process.

Maybe I am not making the wick thin enough, it is a "good" fit, but I cant help thinking that the oxidation can scrape off at the hole, it is a very thin layer
