Which is safer: ego batteries or a mod with separate batteries and good battery charger?

I have a surge protector, it also protects sockets in the house so if one has a fault all the sockets in the house will stop working until the faulty one is unplugged, throw the switch on the ring main and all is back on again.
This however, does not make me complacent about the electrics, I unplug/switch off most plugs at bedtime, it saves a bit of lecky and I am the health & safety officer in my home,I put sky box in stand by mode too, don't switch off the phone or router.
Scared stiff of fires.

I got some Jack Daniels fudges in a nice tin for Christmas which I'm going to cut a hole out charging leads. I know I should also put a small vent hole for gases too but I don't think any harm would come of it if I don't.

What was the make of the charger? It was one that came with one of the ego/riva kits a while back. I've just looked at it again, it say Desan. Don't misunderstand me I've had this a while, but didn't think the chargers had a 'death' date?

I cant see how I could get electrocuted if the batteries are in the charger and they are basically just sat in the tin.

I doubt you'd get much of a shock from charging batteries anyway. The biggest danger is them overheating and melting, seen this happen to a friend once. He borrowed my USB charger for his batteries against my advise and melted a 510 batt.
But this thread prompted me to buy some decent batteries and a decent charger (I hope) for my mods. I realised that safety is more important than a couple of quid saved, but I'll make sure I keep an eye on my Riva charger in future (not that I use my Riva much mow.)

kibbster, what yard stick do you use for buying 'decent chargers', Price, brand or supplier? I cannot see that any of those things will guarantee a 'decent' charger, especially as most of us are totally ignorant about such things and rely on our supplier to ensure that what they are selling is a 'decent safe charger.

Unfortunately, it seems these 510 style chargers aren't very well-made/designed. They don't seem to have the built-in protection that good battery chargers do. Either that, or the quality control on them is poor. The MH Trust I work for just banned all e-cigs because of two incidents at other Trusts where a charging battery started fires... From the descriptions, it sounds like it was a patient, and left unattended, as they said it set fire to bedding, but of course they've decided on a blanket ban (no pun intended lol) I plan to fight this, but one of the things I'll suggest is that they ban people from charging batteries on the premises (or perhaps, not without staff supervision), but I am not hugely optimistic of getting a large organisation to change its mind....
I do think that mod batteries are safer as you can choose to buy good quality named batteries - i.e. AW IMR or Sony/Sanyo/Phillips, and you can get quality chargers with inbuilt protection - like the intellicharger. Unfortunately, we don't know what's actually inside our Ego batteries, so we can't judge that it is reasonably safe. When it comes down to it, a Lithium Ion/Mn battery is a highly concentrated power source which can discharge high voltage relatively quickly, and therefore is never going to be 100% safe.
