Edit: By the way, don't buy into any creams or ointments. They are a waste of money... I dont even know why they make them (suck people in and produce millions?). The best help is an ice cube or dabbing strong cheap aftershave on it. Personally I don't even bother with mine...just let then come and go haha sick of trying Acclovir isn't a waste of money, not if you buy the proper stuff from the chemist! It can halt a cold sore in it's tracks!

Acyclovir is an excellent medication if applied as soon as you feel the tingling of a cold sore coming. Unfortunately once the cold sore is in situ there isn't anything that will make it go away only time The best way to help it on its way is to keep it dry and don't have the urge to pick I suffer very badly with cold sores and have done for the best part 60 years, the last bout covered all the skin from my top lip to my nose and up my nose, not nice, as I am housebound when I have them because of the awful sight. It is caused by the chicken pox virus that lays dormant in many people, even when you have contracted chicken pox and yes very contagious. Make sure you have your own wash flannel, towel and cup etc. I do hope its soon gone, they can be very debilitating

Funny this should come up, as I've never had a cold sore in my life, but in the last 6 weeks or so, I've had the start of three. ??? I managed to stop them in their tracks with a dab of antibac hand rub, thank goodness. Also, I've noticed since vaping, I have a watery, runny nose.. lol .. the antibac rub is no good for that though!

I suffered from cold sores most of my life, my experience being much the same as described by Sue1952. A doc told me that the virus lodges somewhere at the base of the spine until something triggers an outbreak. The trigger, in my case, can be cold winds, sunshine, accidentally scratching my lip, dry lips and stress. There were times when I could get an outbreak simply by eating tomatoes or hot peppers. Any stressful occasion was bound to trigger an outbreak, so much so that I was plagued with them during my teenage years. As I grew older the outbreaks became less frequent and only get them now if I have a heavy cold.
Zovirax cream works for me. I have heard that it's available in tablet form in the USA but my doc says it isn't available here. The cream prevents the outbreak if I use it as soon as I feel the tingle and if I wake up with a sore the Zovirax stops it spreading. As far as I know, the coldsore is most contagious when the blister bursts. Wash your hands carefully after applying the cream and follow Sue's advice about using your own cup, etc. Be especially careful not to touch your eyes after touching the coldsore.
I doubt very much that your outbreak was triggered by vaping. It's more likely that you picked up the infection from someone or something when your resistance was low.

Acyclovir and Zovirax are the same medication one is the generic name. I have had it in tablet form but that was some years ago. It could have now been withdrawn from prescription meds because it is very expensive. I know when I had it in tablet form it was because I had another severe outbreak and it was hoped that it would stop them from spreading

You might not be feeling down but your body is changing and the sore might just be one of the signs of the change, quitting smoking i suppose has all different effects on different people.
My partner was not feeling down but she suffered severe heartburn for 5 days after quitting the real thing.

Ah, Sue, that explains it. I was wondering whether there was a new treatment that I hadn't heard of. Zovirax has been a life saver for me. I always have an unopened tube at the ready. Nothing worked for me until it became available. Some remedies (dabbing with alcohol, covering with bonjela type stuff, etc. even made it worse.

Here's my take on why you get spots, exzema, colds, runny noses, sore throats etc., It's amazing just how many toxins are in your body from smoking. When you stop your body has a massive shock, whereas under normal giving up circumstances you'd be feeling all the other horrible side effects and getting really stressed, you've got the vaping to stop that so you're still getting your nicotine. Therefore while you're happily vaping away and not really feeling like you're missing anything, your body is crying out for all the obnoxious horrible stuff it's been used to having. It'll take a while but everything will settle down eventually

Funnily enough, since I've started vaping (almost a year ago), I've not had any bad coldsores at all. Used to get them four times a year. Big'uns. Like conkers. But now, I'll feel the start of one but it comes to nothing and disappears.....a coincidence? I've heard PG is anti-bacterial or something like that.
Anyone else here experienced a lessening of the dreaded buggers?
