I've made a video that I'd like to upload to Vimeo.
It's at full 1080p and is about 5 minutes long - but the problem is that it comes in at about 8Gb.
I've tried out a few (freebie) video transcoders but none have been able to keep anything near the original quality so was wondering if anybody here has any experience dealing with this sort of thing?
Thanks!

You could use SUPER (google it) but it's a bit of a pita to download. Alternatively, Handbrake is good and simple to use. Both are free and very effective at reducing upload sizes and putting your movies into containers for viewing on just about any device.

At the moment the video is in a MOV container encoded using the "animation" codec (I think that's the right way to put it). Unfortunately the software I'm using to create it - Processing - doesn't give me any other options for the container.
Thanks for the replies - will hopefully get a chance to download and try out Handbrake sometime today. Maybe while OH is in the shower...

Freeware called mpeg streamclip will transcode pretty much any format to any other format. A bit fiddly to use but you can control all aspects of the output video, including quality and file size. I dont know Vimeo or whether they have any constraints on videos you upload. In general avi (xvid codec) and mp4 (x264 codec) are the most widely compatible video formats

A quick test run with Handbrake is showing very promising results!
Just realised that the video I have already rendered wasn't made with the intended final settings so have set it off again - only another 5 hours before it's done.

Decent software I use for recoding is Pazera, free and can be got here www.pazera-software.com/products/vcsuite/. You can fiddle with many settings to get the right balance of quality and file size. You just have to make sure the settings you use can be played in the common video players.

Handbrake is great free software, I've used it a lot in the past. .mov with animation settings is about the largest file size you could use. Probably be best using .mp4 if it's for uploading also using the x264 codec, mkv will most likely not be supported by a lot of video sites. Personally I use Adobe software for my video work, After Effects, Prem Pro and Encore if making Dvd or Bluray.

Streamclip & Pazera VCS both noted for future reference! Handbrake seems to have done the trick for now: It's an animatd version of some of my 2d artwork that I've been working on for some time now - this video is the first that is starting to look like anything promising. I should hopefully be launching a new version of my website soon and wanted to be able to include this and future videos, hence the uploading to Vimeo.

You could always use a different codec, e.g. xvid or divx.
