I always said I would never have one, however my daughter has been down with her new Kindle Fire, and I am hooked, I am a sucker for gadgets. So much you do with them and easier than carting a lappy around with you, just slip in your handbag (or manbag) take it everywhere. Brilliant!

Yeah but the kindle fire is a normal tablet, as opposed to an e-reader, so of course is more usefull but i reckon not as good if you want to read a book on it.

I am thinking of getting one of these, but would use it mainly for reading, so perhaps not the best choice? I've had a basic Kobo for over a year now, really like it but it's starting to have issues My daughter has the Kindle Fire and loves it, but she's not as avid a reader as I am!

Fire is a tablet so backlit LCD, not easy on the eyes for reading books. Battery life will not be as good as a kindle either.
Kindle uses a better display for reading, new ones have a light built in as well. Kindle display will be similar, if not better than a Kobo.

So I should just get a basic Kindle if it will mainly be used for reading?

I have the first one. And find it brilliant for reading. If its just for reading its all you need karma.

I prefer a dedicated e-reader. I have the Kindle touch but if I were buying one now I would get the Kindle paperwhite. My sister has the Paperwhite and it's excellent. The text is clearer and it has a built-in light. The only downside to the Paperwhite is that it doesn't have a speaker so you can't use it as an ipod or for audio books.

Kindle is the best of all e-readers. If you are just interested in reading get one. Check this page, you can subscribe and get an e-mail everyday on the free books released. I've had a Kindle for nearly 2 years and have hardly spent anything on books due to the amount of free ones Amazon release every day. Kindle Users Forum

I have a Kindle, the keyboard version & if anything happens to it, I'll replace with the very same. It's over 18 months & still going strong though. For reading, it's perfect, indoors or outdoors.

Is it still working well over a year old Suede? I have it well over a year. I take it to work every night (taxi driver). The battery lasts a long time. I got a cover for it and its still as new. Getting books is a doddle and free if you shop around. But amazon is quite reasonable

Cheers guys and thank you Phoenix for starting this thread! I do now have a spare Kobo which has been given to me, so hopefully I can download the books I still haven't read onto that, then I think it will be the paperwhite Kindle with back light. Cheaper than the 'Fire' so Mr Karma will be pleased
