I've just had a question on recoiling a kanga t3, someone wants to know the best wire to use. Any ideas?

For this I find that 0.16 nichrome - 4 wraps - noramlly ends up about 2 ohms.
You can use 0.2 Kanthal but the resistance will be much lower and you will need the wraps to be tight to get them all in.
Hope that helps.

Did one yesterday using 3mm Silica and .20 Kanthal, 5 wraps came out at 2.4oms Ive found 5 wraps of 0.2 normally gets 2-2.2 for me. I think I just decided that I prefered doing the 4 with the 0.16 - less chance of shorts off the sides with a smaller coil. Although I found them a little fiddly - Ive sent all mine to spikey now! Recoiled 6 on the trot - that bloody annoying little bung!

Is that 0.2mm Kanthal ? I suspect I've just bolloxed up my order for Kanthal by ordering 0.3.
Grrrr...

Can you contact the Vendor and ask them to change your order for you Figgis?
You'll need to get more wraps in to achieve a decent resistance, depends how much space you have to work in and how good your winding is.

Can you contact the Vendor and ask them to change your order for you Figgis? I suppose I could, I still don't know if 0.2 is the right way to go as I only use Egos and Rivas. If 0.3 just lowers resistance then I suppose I just need more wraps. I did see a video by Todd that used a 0.32 gauge at 5 wraps and he suggested that it was a tight fit, so assumed it was the right way to go. This thread has just confused me some.

Must admit I only ever use .20 Kanthal, always works fine. Having said that, all these other sizes confuses me so I suppose I just use what's familiar to me. .20 Kanthal seems to be what most people use but not sure as to the reasoning behind it. Most of the vids by Scott and Todd show them mostly using it, so I guess thats why I use it.

I'm pretty much a two trick pony as well with these wire sizes Greigster . . . 0.16mm for anything that I'm tight on space for and 0.20mm for Ody's/Penelope. 0.16mm is my fav, as you don't need many wraps to get a lowish resistance, laziness on my part as much as anything. Although you get a better flavour the more wraps you do, as there's a larger heating surface.

It's my first go, so ultimately it's no bad thing to get it wrong and Kanthal is only a couple of quid. I actually have my 'challenge' head on now to get it working whatever anyone says

Well my report on using 0.3mm gauge is that it's an experiment doomed to failure - don't try it I managed to get about 7 wraps onto some 2mm silica wick (which took some very determined use of clamps and a wire-turner) and even that got a reading of 1.3 ohms. There just isn't enough space in the head to get the extra 3-4 wraps you'd need, so a couple of quid down the pan, but you live and learn and it's improved my winding ability no end having to improvise how best to get 7 wraps into such a small space 0.2mm will be on order in the next few days though ! One thing I did find is replacing the loose bits of the wick that sit on top of the coil with 4 strands of 1mm silica really sort out the gurgling/leaking problems I had. I did that to all my coils that are still working and they seem watertight now.
