Major contract award Major contract award – innovative nicotine inhalation device
Consort Medical plc (LSE: CSRT), today announces that its Bespak Division has been awarded a major new contract. Bespak has signed a multi-year exclusive contract with Nicoventures Ltd (“Nicoventures”), a stand-alone company within the British American Tobacco Group focusing on the development and commercialisation of licensed nicotine products. The contract is for the supply of an innovative nicotine inhalation product for use as a safer alternative to smoking.
The supply of the product by Bespak would commence following regulatory approval. Revenues from the contract will be dependent on product sales following consumer launch. The capital expenditure required will be funded from current lending facilities over a three year period. As previously announced, Bespak was awarded the manufacturing development contract for the device in November 2011.
Bespak will manufacture the inhalation system and have responsibility for the final assembly of the product, including a canister containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient. The complete and final assembly will be housed in a dedicated facility. The product will also incorporate Bespak’s proprietary valve. This continues Bespak’s strategic development in broadening its product and service offering.

Oh dear 0 this is what concerns me about this statement - "Bespak will manufacture the inhalation system and have responsibility for the final assembly of the product, including a canister containing the active pharmaceutical ingredient." Referring to the nic juice as a pharmaceutical ingredient says it all, doesn't it!? Andy

Jon Glenn, Chief Executive Officer of Consort Medical, commented:
"This is an exciting contract award for Consort Medical, which further demonstrates the full spectrum of the Group's competencies, from product development, through to drug handling and full device assembly.
The full extent of the revenue opportunity will only become evident following regulatory approval and the product launch. Whilst we do not expect any near term revenue impact, we are optimistic about the prospects for the product in this very promising market."
Adrian Marshall, Nicoventures' Managing Director, commented:
"We are delighted to have agreed the contract with. This takes us closer to our ambition of introducing an innovative, licensed nicotine product as a safer alternative to smoking."
Consort Medical is currently in a close period, and will publish its Interim results on 5 December 2012.
...........
Following s copied from Nicoventires web pages.
Nicoventures Limited is a newly created start-up company whose objective is to provide a new choice to smokers looking for a safer alternative to cigarettes.
Nicoventures will focus exclusively on the development and commercialisation of innovative regulatory approved nicotine products that provide a consumer-acceptable alternative to cigarettes without the serious risk to health of smoking.
We want to explore the development of innovative nicotine products that, subject to regulatory approval, will provide smokers with an alternative to cigarettes and a product they actually want to use.
Why are we different? The UK Government’s recently updated public health strategy for England recognises there are many smokers who may not want to quit smoking but who want a safer alternative to cigarettes.
We believe that the products currently on the market today are not meeting the needs of these smokers.
That is why we have brought together scientists, regulatory specialists, innovators and communication experts from a wide range of backgrounds to work together with the aim of providing smokers with a safer alternative to cigarettes.
What’s the benefit for consumers? We believe we can offer adult smokers a range of innovative regulatory approved nicotine products which will provide them with much of the experience they expect to get from a cigarette but without the serious risk to health of smoking.
Will there be a benefit for public health? Working towards the goal of reducing the harm caused by smoking is something that should be of benefit to society. Our ambition is to develop and make available a range of products that will provide smokers with alternatives to cigarettes without the serious risk to health of smoking.
What are we doing now? Nicoventures is exploring and developing a range of innovative nicotine products that, subject to regulatory approval, will provide a new choice to smokers looking for a safer alternative to cigarettes that they will want to use.

Andy Making drug delivery systems, including inhalers, is what Bespak does. It probably doesn't take responsibility for what goes in them. It doesn't, as far as I can see, test drugs. If BAT are trying to get a juice approved as a pharma product, they'd also need a pharma approved delivery system, and Bespak will give them that. I don't know if cartos would get approval or not, but it looks to me as if Bespak would deliver a tank system, which seems a step up to me. Does anyone know if BAT are running pharma tests on juice? They may just be covering themselves in case someone else does. My reading of the EU directive is that no juice would get approval if it contained "characterising flavours", but there is a lot of the world outside the EU, my reading may be wrong, and that part of the directive may get canned anyway, particularly if BAT deploy their lobbyists. I wouldn't have thought BAT would be interested in marketing a tasteless product.

As I said, with our government signing up to a 2mg limit in spring, taking time for it to get passed,by this time next year the tobacco & pharmaceutical companies working together will dominate and control the market,I don't want to sound pessimistic but we could all be paying either alot more for an inferior product, smoking again or relying on a black market and potentially breaking the law.
