We certainly could Mr L.
We could also end up with constantly being in coalitions, the green party, the yoga flyers or (shock horror) one of the big 2 as usual.
I will state AGAIN that I am not advocating someone being forced to vote for one of any group of candidates.. A vote can still be witheld!
As for the form filling not being that much different... well it isnt. Its still putting (in some cases) massive amounts of personal information into the powers that be's hands. Those same people which could/would misuse the voting system could/would misuse all the other information we are legally obliged to provide them.
As for the rather tiresome bolding that you found it necessary to do. I shall rephrase my comment as "...was a rarity, then the way you suggested of sending the message....". Happier?
Edited post to say we seem to be going round and round and round in circles on this. You and I are not going to agree on this issue Mr. L. Time to agree to disagree?

Blue I was against filling in the Census, I think it totally disgusting that we should be forced to fill in such a load of BS! I did put my religion as Jedi just to give them a bit more paperwork!
What they really should be doing is physically seeking out all those that are illegally in this country and sending them back home!

We are wasting our breath anyway as no goverment in its right mind would want to lose 30% of the populations vote in one swell swoop by bringing in a law to force people to vote

What do people think the main reason is that such a large percentage of the population dont vote ? And i dont mean just saying all none voters are apathetic and lazy (theres a reason behind apathy !) Is it that theres so little difference now between the 2/3 main partys ? Is it that people dont see any difference in there daily lifes , whoever is in power ? Is it that none of the main partys represent these people's ideals ? ?

Yes, yes and yes. Probably the reason for voter apathy.

I'm afraid I have seen far too much difference in my life with the new gvt thanks. If anything it made me more determined to vote.

more reasons....
didnt bother going on electoral roll
decided voting for the party they prefer is a wasted vote as they have "no chance" of getting into power
disolusioned (sp) with all gvts regardless of the party, due to the misrepresentation of the publics views.

Seduce me to vote for you. Break your election promises. Tell me it's for the good of the country. Yeah right! Blairs lot had to be 'on message' at all times. Not for their constituents though. Now we've got Eton nobs jockeying for power and doing all they can to hold on to it, because it's good for the country.

No arguments from me on all the reasons why people don't turn out to vote . . . I was listening to the Press Conference today post the inquest verdict on the 7/7 London bombings given by the victims relatives.
Not only were they unable to claim Legal Aid to fight their case, given that Terrorists have been granted 25million in LA in this country . . . but they were unable to claim travel expenses to and from the inquest hearings despite many of them living great distances away from London.
All that at the time of MP's claiming vast sums on expenses for fripperies.
As a voter in this country I feel totally disenfranchised with all the major parties and really struggle to find someone to vote for . . . . who I think will do the country the least harm.
Looking like a massive defeat on AV as well.

I don't think people should be allowed to become politicians until they have had real jobs in the RW.
None of this intern > researcher > safe seat malarkey.

As usual I'm a bit late but I feel like sticking my oar in!
I do think it should be compulsory to vote as there's really no excuse for not doing so. If you're one of the "I don't vote because they're all the same" brigade then by all means 'spoil' your paper. If you work long hours and can't be bothered to trek along to a polling station, then apply for a postal vote. It would also be a plan to have on-line polling in the same way that we had that option when completing the recent census.
Voting is compulsory in Oz and that can hardly be described as a 'dictatorship' can it?
On the run-up to the recent local authority election so many call-in radio program 'regulars' stated their dislike of all politicians and stated they weren't going to vote for any of them. These 'regulars' are the most vocal on the state of the Country via call-in shows and yet aren't prepared to make a statement of any kind that could change what it is they hate so much. I despair sometimes!
