Been having a quick look for a couple of batterys and a charger for my newly aquired vamo but which battery do I need. Do the bats need to be protected or not some retailers recommend only protected ones while others recommend you use unprotected ones who would have thought buying batterys would be so complicated.

I cannot help you with your question as I don't own a vamo yet, but am posting to say I feel your pain.
took me nearly a whole day to find the 18350 bats for my mini lavatube.

Browser, I have bought a Vamo and like you needed help. the guys/gals on here on been very helpful. 1st you need a really good Battery Charger then it will protect your batteries so it really isn't an issue if you get protected/unprotected as the charger will protect them. Next is the batteries themselves, you need good ones like efest 18650 or if you want to use smaller size vamo you need efest 18350, others will recommend other brands cheaper that the efest the choice is yours, but personally I want to take care of my Vamo and get the best out of it. Hope this helps, happy vaping

I use the Xtar WP2II charger, efest 18650 2000 mah and 18350 800mah all from Vape Escape. No issues to report after two and a half months with the vamo and long running times especially with the 18650s.

If you have a mod like the Vamo which has electronics in it, it will protect your battery from getting too low, so you don't need protected batteries in it. If you have a purely mechanical mod with no electronics, then protected batteries would be the best to have!

Not really qualified to say Jane (sold my Vamo on) , but from what I've read, they should be fine! It seemed to be the 3400mAh ones that were to fat! Good price there from a decent ebay seller

I have a pair of those and they fit fine. I'm using AW IMR 2000mah in mine at the moment. Its when you get into really high mah ratings that things can become questionable.
