try google ,, thread chart or something. Something like this: So for a 3mm wick it looks like i would need M4 EDIT: Just measured my metal screw and it is the M3 that i have been using which would explain the tightness, so it does look like M4 it is for me, might get some M3's for 2mm wick aswell whilst im at it.

A 2mm thread will give you a 1.7 internal diameter 4mm thread will give you a 3.2 internal diameter If you use a brass screw you will be able to see your windings better. Do you know of a online calculator where i can input the mm's and it will tell me the internal diameter? You wouldn't know the exact internal diameter unless the thread type/size is stated, most of the time it isn't with screws or bolts. With a M2/M3 even M4 bolt i'd opt for .5mm though at a guesstimate.

No it wouldn't be far off, especially with the small sizes as there's not much to work with anyway.

Whatever size inside coil diameter you want just choose the tapping drill size of the same, which tells you the mm size thread you need. simple's So for a 3mm wick ie 3.3 tapping drill, use 4mm thread

it doesn't need to be accurate anyway as you're not going to get your kanthal right into the thread because of shape, and whatever you use you'll need to make your wicks to suit the coil you've made.
It is a good idea using bolts/screws to make very neat coils but I prefer to make mine direct onto the wick so I know they're snug and not slack or over tight. Each to their own though, some like using the drillbit method also.
edited as I was talking crap and wrote it the wrong way around lol
I wonder if anyone as tried running a Die over a solid mesh wick ? if it would just make a right mess of the SS mesh which is likely or whether it'd leave a workable thread on it.

Think you will find that 3mm will be to big for a 2mm wick , I would go with the 2.5mm thread.

I had read in the past that an M2 bolt could be used and a tip was to get a white plastic M2 bolt which made it easier to see the Kanthal. I searched around locally but could not find a white plastic one I don't know if the little plastic bolts that hold your car number plate on, is the right size? Got loads here, just need to find some that are in stock www.componentforce.co.uk/category/398/nylon-nuts--amp--boltsyou can get 2 of these free if you just look at the site thanks

I find it easier to wind micro coils on a drill bit, so that the turns butt up to each other. I now use cotton wool exclusively as i don't like the initial taste from silica. Neil

I use M3 brass rod for micro coils. Length to suit you sir so its easy to hold, brass so it's easy to see the contrast with the kanthal, even spacing with .32mm kanthal no need to heat the kanthal before coiling, and a quick pulse then squeeze with tweezers to compress the coils.

Just reading through this and I've had a thought....we are all ex smokers so I'm sure we've probably got an old Clipper lighter stashed in a drawer somewhere, the flint mech on one of those was held by a long thin nylon bolt.
Would they work? I'm just about to do my very first build so I can probably answer my own question in a couple of days
