While I was at the shops the other day I was looking at batteries and voltages as I've never really taken any notice before. I found all the regular AA or AAA are too low a voltage to be of any use but was wondering about the square 9v batteries.
Could they be used in a mod with some sort of jiggery pokery involved to reduce the volts? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?
Also what about 3 AA's at 1.5v each, that makes 4.5v right? Would they be useable in a mod?
And pinching this from another thread what would I need to turn a battery into a mod? I see the cheap torches in the pound shop all the time and think they would make a good mod. What tools do you need?

I'm no expert Lee but dont the batteries have to be protected etc, some special type. I'm sure if you try ordinary ones you will have problems, but someone with better knowledge will put you right

Easy one first, the 3 1.5v batts will work although it wold have to be a very long torch to take 3 AA's. 3AAA's work ok but wont last long under load. The 9v works but needs a high mah rating to get any decent life out of it. (someone with more information will tell us it's to do with watts and amps), anyways, my son and i made 2 of these 18 months ago, the first worked like a charm at 8.4v with an old standard 510 atty, vapour was immense with a massive throat hit. The second was a let down, made exactly the same but the battery didnt last long, got resigned to the drawer. Was a neat little mod too, nice and small.

Looks like it could work then. I'm going to do some googling and see what I can come up with.

I have read on the ECF forum about a mod that uses 4 x standard AA batts I think it is called a puck mod, lol
I know what you mean about the poundland torch section. I have a few of the torches used in the 109 to have a play with. I don't quite know what to do with them or even get them apart. Are there any how to's for this type of mod?

In theory, any battery that gives you around 3.7v to 6v will work as long as you use a suitable atty. At 9v, you'd need a voltage regulator of some sort. How long those batteries last is down to the MAh rating of the battery. As for tools: Soldering Iron & Solder Craft Knife Precision or Jewellers Wire Cutters Epoxy or other suitable glue (avoid Superglue if using a plastic body) Drill & Drill Bits (I use a Drill and a Dremel) Sandpaper That should get you on your way Lee! Box Mods are the easiest to get started with - Tube Mods take a little more practice! Sean

Theirs a massive section on modding on ECF Lee that should also help you on your way, I did read somewhere that normal batteries wouldn't work as the atomiser would just drain the power as soon as you fired up but I could be wrong, good luck

Thanks for all the pointers. I've also read that these batteries won't last long. It will be interesting to see if I can come up with something.

I don't like to contradict Sean, but I have it on good authority, Katfish, that the only tools needed are an angle grinder, a lump hammer and lots of duct tape

LOL, getting the torch apart is easy! It's the next step that can be tricky. PM me if you need advice. Sean
